I love D&D, so of course the title also grabbed ...

I first heard about this book on Jeff Burk’s Jeff Attack’s podcast. He was interviewing the author, and I quickly zoned in on the fact that this is a weird fantasy novella combined with one sassy drag queen’s crazy antics. I love D&D, so of course the title also grabbed a hold of me. The problem is I found more interest in the author and the idea behind the novella than the actual content within. There are a decent amount of hilarious scenes, and I did find myself thoroughly enjoying the protagonist - Sleazella, but I still did not find myself hooked on the novella like I wanted to be. I believe for me the main issue came down to length. I just felt like there were too many good ideas that did not have enough time to develop into anything; for example, the fornication war.
Yet, I did find my time with Sleazella to be enjoyable. What can I say? I enjoy strange tales, and at its heart THIS is a strange tale. I give this little book three out of five stars, it's done well, and it has plenty of good ideas, I just did not find them fleshed out enough for my taste. With that said, I will definitely be picking up future MP Johnson novels because the talent is there, I just need a longer tale to fill in that hunger this book left me

Hilarious, Gross, and Sexy...

MP Johnson should be writing for television or film; a lot of writers get this compliment from reviewers, but Johnson has found a comfortable niche. It’s a rare gift for a writer to be able to sustain a consistent level of humor and originality through a narrative without losing a reader’s interest. While some of the best bizarro novellas are parodies and satires, MP Johnson proves that he is among the best in the new wave of bizarro fiction writers. (In case you’re wondering, MP Johnson’s book is pretty gross, with lots of swords and sorcery action).

The challenge many bizarro novels face is the “bizarre” factor; how long can a story retain its sense of originality without devolving into a relatively boring story, once the bizarre has worn off on the reader? The secret is this: an infusion of heart and character in the storytelling, and Johnson delivers. The best comedies are able to keep their audience in the same fashion, and it is here where I should draw comparisons between MP Johnson and the folks who directed Napoleon Dynamite (they made another cool movie but I can never remember the name, and I refuse to Google it). We have a genuine “weird” factor, but at the heart of the story the protagonist faces an internal struggle. It is here that I must also compare MP Johnson to Carlton Mellick III, who has also applied this mechanism to good effect in his bizarro work.

MP Johnson has transformed the “hero’s journey” concept into an entertaining, hilarious ride that gives you a chance to experience something new on every page, something that only a few bizarro authors can achieve. Johnson managed this same feat in his previous novel, but the difference is the neatly-characterized quips and struggles Sleazella experiences, which continues to lend the story a sense of authenticity without losing its ability to keep the reader involved. Johnson is an entertainer, storyteller, and bizarro craftsman. The other reviews and the synopsis will tell you what this book is “about”; my intention was to tell you what you would experience.

This book is EVERYTHING!

There are few books that can make me blush. This is one of them. It's not for the faint hearted. It's gorier, weirder, and more perverted than any other book I've read. In short, it's perfect. It made me giggle with glee, gag, and guffaw. It had echoes of John Waters, Divine, and Troma, but in a far more streamlined and modern way. It's a short read too. As a weird fantasy nerd and drag aficionado, I cannot recommend this book enough.

Less is more: the ascetic culture of a low-cost retail giant

This book is the untold inside story from a former executive of German retail discount giant Aldi. Some of the advices that I recall from the German edition are the following (they are all interrelated):

ASCETICISM AS A BASIC PRINCIPLE. This word is usually connected to people avoiding physical pleasures and comforts, esp. for religious reasons (e.g. monks). In this context, it's more focused on what you can do without: headquarters, external market study, management consultants, and highly complex information technology. Instead Aldi focuses on a simple price strategy (everyday-low-price), undifferentiated product assortment, and avoid luxury.

THRIFTINESS AS A GUIDING PRINCIPLE. Everybody's talking about cost consciousness, but at Aldi this is second nature. There's a continuous avoidance of unnecessary costs on all levels.

INTERNAL RECRUITING OF HIGH-LEVEL MANAGERS. This principle is also recognised in bestseller "Good to Great". It's also a strong signal to internal candidates that they can expect to be next in line ... so be patient, you're time will come. The principle makes sure that top-managers fit the company culture. The negative effect is that you occasionally will be lacking the fresh eyes from outside.

LIVE THE DECENTRALISED ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE. Aldi believes that the most efficient enterprise exists, when the overall direction set by the central unit is clear and remainder of the decisions are left to the decentralized organization - closer to where the action is.

MAKE A VIRTUE OF A NECESSITY. Many firms focus on doing some things unusually well. That's not necessary. The best service is often just doing the obvious and necessary tasks in a simple way.

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENTS. Instead of believing in huge cost cutting exercises or grandiose concepts like business process reengineering, Aldi believes in all employees' ideas to reducing costs. They are close to day-to-day work and can best evaluate what needs to be done to continually make things simpler and less expensive. This idea is closer to the [Japanese] quality concept of continuous improvement (evolution) than any [American] management fads on cost reduction based on organizational revolutions or merger-mania.

STICK TO YOUR KNITTING. Do only what you can do really well. Retailers are to trade with consumers; producers are to produce. Don't diversify, stick to the core business. Concentration is important for efficiency.

NO PUBLIC APPEARANCES. The attitude is that the public information is useful only to the competition. The managers' self-manifestation won't bring any competitive advantage for Aldi. This principle probably only works, since it's a private company. In the brave new world of war for talent and capital, this attitude probably will have to be adjusted.

SIMPLICITY IN PRACTICE. Avoid strong central staff and a big headquarters. The practice in the line of business is much more important than any theoretical staff work. Line managers do all special tasks. Focus on lean organizational hierarchies, clear decision authority, clear targets, and simple execution.

The INSIDE story

Brandes worked as a ALDI director and set up ALDI in Holland amongst other things. I read the book in German and it is great. A must if you work in retail. Brandes worked at Aldi and wrote this book to strengthen the company's "institutional memory".

Considering this book isn't out yet, and has been delayed for the past year (was supposed to be out in 2014, then 2015, now 2016). There seems to be no genuine point in releasing the book in 2016, since MySQL is now up to 5.7, and by next year, it will likely be the production standard. I was, for months, on the list for pre-order, for about $40ish (US dollars).
Should the contents of the book actually demonstrate any review worth re-considering, then I will gladly amend this posting and rating.

Are these reviews padded by the author? This is a pamphlet, not a real book. It has barely more information that the Forex Wiki article. There is nothing for intermediate or advanced readers. It's barely even a beginners guide! No real strategy. A couple primitive diagrams. No candlesticks. Nothing on actual trading, like when to enter/exit or how to predict movement probability. It's not even a decent glossary of terminology. Save your money. Google "forex" , spend 5 minutes reading the first or second page that comes up in the search results and you'll acquire more knowledge about forex that you will by reading the 36 cent a page brochure.

It goes into information about how to expand in forex trading and teaches you all the strategies and tips that will make you successful in making money this way. It has clear information and is backed up with graphs and illustrations to help you understand the process. I would highly recommend this book if you are interested in learning more about this and as a beginner I found it extremely useful.

Grade 5-9–Tamora Pierce's magic series continues with the third book of the series (Scholastic, 1998) focused on one of the young super-talented magicians, Daja, the only surviving member of a band of sea-going traders lost in a shipwreck. Each of the four has a specific talent, but unplumbed depths of hidden abilities continue to emerge as the foursome explores the unusual ties that have linked them mentally, emotionally, and magically. Their four mentors are here too, with assorted dukes, ladies, academic mages (lacking the "wild" talent of these young people), and many other characters. This full cast production performs a great service for listeners by using a different voice for each character and audio effects to highlight the mind-talking. Music cues at the beginning of each tape are helpful, but there are no chapter listings to coordinate following along with the book. The readers give lively and engaging performances, and the part of the narrator is read by the author, who adds depth to the telling and provides a nice touch for fans. Pierce's pace and emphasis are deliberate, helping to keep the complex interrelationships of mages and their magic in the listeners' minds. Familiarity with the previous two books is not necessary to understand this title. The Circle of Magic Continues: Daja's Book (#3)

The four friends, possessors of wild magic, continue the process of learning how to use and control their magics; their teachers/mentors, continue their own quest: to understand the power (particularly the combined power) of these youngsters. In this novel, they are all traveling with Sandry's uncle, the Prince, as he surveys the problems of his lands. In particular, the kingdom they are visiting is suffering from a severe drought and is plagued with raging fires. The resident mage, university trained in traditional methods of magic, is fiercely possessive of his power to control fires, but is showing signs of stress and fatigue. When he dies during a sudden outbreak of high crown fires, all the mages, both mentors and mentees, must collaborate to save people's lives; in particular, Tris--who has been banished from any contact with her people, the Traders--must find new power and control when a fire threatens the Traders' caravan as it is departing.
Although this book focuses most heavily on Daja, she shares the stage with Briar, Tris, and Sandry, and we the readers continue to learn more about these great characters. I love the diversity of Pierce's characters: a mix of male and female heroes, coming from an astonishing range of economic and ethnic backgrounds. She does not brush aside the real problems that their differences can create, but she does show how experience and relationships can lead to new, stronger ties.
A worthy number 3 for this series: don't miss it!

Daja's Book is the third in the Circle of Magic series by Tamora Pierce following four young mages on their learning adventures.

Off to the north with the Duke, the four are spreading their wings on a new adventure. Daja's outcast status and an interesting bit of magical accident leave her with a living metal plant and a Trader who wants to buy. Of course, she can't talk to Daja, so the fun begins.

Standing up for their foster-sister, Tris, Briar, and Sandry shame the Traders into doing business with Daja and she feels almost at home again. Of course, it can't last, and the dried-up, fireless forest soon turns against them. The four learn what it means to risk everything, even their own lives, to save others from certain death. And Daja gets a new magic out of it, too.

This is a fantastic series... I've read it more than once.

Even though these books are meant for young adults, I would recommend them to adult fans of fantasy and adventure as well. While properly classified as fantasy, they have a novel-like feel to them, and the fact that they are in series is also a plus to me - I'm one of those folks that always wonders what happens to the other characters when the novel ends! The characters are very well developed and consistent across all of the books, and while the endings are always more or less happy, there is a lot of sadness and emotion along the way. The main characters come from diverse backgrounds, and have all had some serious obstacles to overcome - racism and class perception issues among them. Very well done!

About the Author

John Michael Greer (Western Maryland) has been a student of occult traditions and the unexplained for more than thirty years. A Freemason, a student of geomancy and sacred geometry, and a widely read blogger, he is also the author of numerous books, including Monsters, The New Encyclopedia of the Occult and Secrets of the Lost Symbol, and currently serves as the Grand Archdruid of the Ancient Order of Druids in America (AODA), a contemporary school of Druid nature spirituality. In the following excerpt, author John Michael Greer explains that monsters have something valuable to teach us about ourselves and our world.

A thousand years ago, vampires and shapeshifters, spirits of the ancestors and spirits that were never human at all, intelligent beings with subtle bodies or none, were as much a matter of everyday life then as electricity is now.

But we know better nowadays, of course.

Don't we?

This book is based on the uncomfortable knowledge that we don't know better-that at least some of these entities had, and still have, a reality that goes beyond the limits of human imagination and human psychology. For most people nowadays, such ideas would be terrifying if they weren't so preposterous. Plenty of modern Americans believe that UFOs are spacecraft from other worlds and psychics can bend silverware with their minds-but the existence of vampires and werewolves? To make things worse, this book explores such beings from the standpoint of an equally discredited system of thought: the traditional lore of Western ceremonial magic, which has been denounced and derided by right-thinking folk ever since the end of the Renaissance.

The word "monster" comes from the Latin monstrum, "that which is shown forth or revealed." The same root also appears in the English word "demonstrate," and several less common words (such as "remonstrance") that share the same sense of revealing, disclosing, or displaying. In the original sense of the word, a monster is a revelation, something shown forth.

This may seem worlds away from the usual modern meaning of the word "monster"-a strange, frightening and supposedly mythical creature-but here, as elsewhere in the realm of monsters, appearances deceive. Certainly, monsters are strange, at least to those raised in modern ways of approaching the world. As we'll see, too, monsters have a great deal to do with the realm of myth, although this latter word (like "monster" itself) has older and deeper meanings that evade our modern habits of thought. The association between monsters and terror, too, has practical relevance, even when the creatures we call "monsters" fear us more than we fear them.

The myth, the terror, and the strangeness all have their roots in the nature of the realm of monsters and the monstrous-a world of revelations, where the hidden and the unknown show furtive glimpses of themselves. If we pay attention to them, monsters do have something to reveal. They show us the reality of the impossible, or of those things we label impossible; they point out that the world we think we live in, and the world we actually inhabit, may not be the same place at all.

An interesting primer, but lacking

This book is definitely worthwhile as a kind of "rainy Saturday morning" read. It has some interesting information, but overall it doesn't contain enough to really make you feel like you have a handle on the different beings the author covers. This is a book I would recommend to someone who has a passing interest in this kind of stuff and is looking for something quick & simple. I don't really believe in alot of things the author does, but I still like reading about other ideas on how the world works.
The author's arrogant and condescending attitude towards scientific "laws" (author's quotation marks) is very annoying, especially in the section where he discusses the Hmong. He comes off as a whiny know-it-all who wants you to know how unevolved you are if you place any stock in scientific theory.

I have read a few of John Michael Greer's books and let me tell you: the cover on this book does not do it justice. This book is fascinating. It contains an absolute treasure trove of information. Perfect for anyone with any interest in the Paranormal and/or Magickal/Legendary Creatures. Highly recommended!!!

A new perspective on the paranormal.

This is one of the first books that actually gets its facts straight.

"Monsters" is the must have field guide for people wishing to dive into the paranormal. What you will not only find in this book are detailed descriptions of magical creatures, but actual ritual magick that will protect you from said beings.

I can promise you that your perspective on many magickal beings will alter if you do not already know the truth about them.
