About the Author
Oscar Ratti received his degree in classical studies and law from the University of Naples where he was intercollegiate Greek-Roman wrestling champion and a member of the championship judo team. He later came to the United States and began to study aikido with Yasuo Ohara, one of the first instructors to teach in New York.

Adele Westbrook studied philosophy at Columbia University at the same time co-author Oscar Ratti was doing graduate work in the classical languages. They began to practice aikido together, and while studying under a variety of instructors in the United States and Europe, started the collection of notes and sketches which finally developed into this illustrated introduction to the art of aikido.

They also authored Secrets of the Samurai, and Mr. Ratti, now deceased, also provided the illustrations for Code of the Samurai, both available from Tuttle Publishing.

This is a fantastic book, overall

This is a fantastic book, overall, though I am probably not experienced enough yet to fully utilize it. The techniques are fully illustrated, and there is text to back it up where it's less clear. Foundational techniques like the kote gaeshi are illustrated in great detail, then other techniques that are built off of it are less descriptive, but still show what's going on. This book illustrates the flow of the techniques well, and while I'm sure it would be easier for a more experienced practitioner to follow, it helps me as a beginner to get a better grasp on the techniques that I've learned.

Meant more for a scholar than a casual reader

This book, nevertheless, is clear and concise. That is if you overlook all those Greek names ! I learned a bit about Ancient Greece as well how the leaders of both the Athenians and the Spartans conducted a war.

The Relevance of Greek History

By the rank,subject, and age of this book, I doubt many, if anyone, will read this review. Thus, if you are reading these words, you are probably one of the few who already enjoys reading about ancient history and are just trying to decide which book in this area you will read next. If this is you, read this book.
Personally I knew some things, but not much about this war. Kagan discusses, in detail, the views of three of four historians on the causes and origins of the war, how the war could of been avoided, and how it was fought. What is maddening is that he often repeats what two or three people say, and then tells you why they are are wrong.
If you are not familiar with the war, this approach can be confusing. However, if you have time or already familiar with the "Archidamian War", this book is very satisfying. After reading this book, you will have a clearer understanding about the war and the people who fought it.
Personally, I am a political junkie. I found myself so fascinated with the stunning details about the passions and politics of these people that they seemed as clear and as relevent to me as any story in the news today.
This is Kagan's gift. With marvelous use of analogies plucked from every time and corner of history, he shows how Thuclyides was right, events repeat themselves. The form is always a little different, but often almost the same as some past drama. This 2500 years old war is relevent today, not just for drama or historians, but for both moderen politicians and military stratigists. If we choose to listen.
My only concern for this book is that, with the gaps in the records, much of Kagan work is as much fiction as history. He tells us what he believes to be the most probable reasons why this event occured or why something else happened. But, in the end, those are only educated deductions from the record, not what actually happened. Kagan, in particular, sees man as more rational creature then, in my view, he actually is. Men and women often do things for no reasons or, for very bad ones. Kagan assumes city-states were more rational then men, when a city-state is just a collection of men. Men who are very irrational at times.
Still, this is a small criticism. The book is great. Read it and remember, it is easier to learn from other's mistakes then to make them yourself. Thank you Mr. Kagan.

This is the second volume of Donald Kagan and it is just as great as the Outbreak of the Peloponnesian War (a term that reflects the Athenian point of view of Thucydides. It covers the first ten years of the conflict (431 to 421), the so-called Archidamian War, after the name of the Spartan king who lead the early campaigns.

The book begins with an excellent chapter on plans and resources, and discusses to what extent each side's strategy delivered the expected results within the expected timeframe. Sparta's aims - "to liberate Greece" - meant the destruction of Athens' Empire by restoring the autonomy of its Greek subject states, but also the destruction of the Athenian fleet and of the Long Walls by which Athens could protct itself from Sparta's army, escape its retribution and inflict its own damage. Kagan makes clear that Athens' war aims - as defined by Pericles - were not to destroy either Sparta or its alliance but rather to hold out for long enough and inflict sufficient damage on Sparta and its allies so as to wear them down and convince them to make pace and maintain the status quo.

As such, the ten-year conflict, which essentially ended as a draw, has sometimes been seen as a qualified strategic victory for Athens. Throughout the book, however, Kagan makes the point that this is incorrect. Both sides underestimated the ennemy, many things that happened were largely unexpected and both sides' initial strategies failed.

Moreover, initially, both Archidamos and Pericles seem to have rather reluctant to vigorously prosecute the war. While the Spartans seem to have believed that Athens would yield after its territory have been invaded and his crops destroyed in several consecutive years, it did not, with Athenians keepinf behind their walls and relying instead on the fleet and importing grain from Crimea to make up for the loss of domestic production. While Pericles had anticipated such a conflict, Kagan shows by analyzing Athens financial resources and reserves that it would be hard pressed to carry it out for more than three years. In addition, of course, the plague which struck Athens particularly hard because all of the population was concentrated behind the walls and carried away Pericles himself was, of course, utterly unexpected.

Anyway, Kagan's conclusion to this volume is that the end of the Archidamian war disappointed both sides and that the initial strategies of both sides were inadequate and ill-conceived, with Athens financial plans being particularly inadequate. Athens, which wanted to force Sparta to make peace rather than destroy her, got its way, but it took ten years and was obtained at huge human and financial cost. Moreover, during this period, Athens did not manage to make itself invulnerable to invasion so that, with hindsight, the war was not only a draw but perhaps also the peace should be seen as a breathing space for both sides.

One final note: if anything, this volume is perhaps even better than the first one. THis is because, unlike the first tome, it contains multiple well-drawn and accurate maps through which all the events and campaigns can be followed by the reader. Amazingly, this book has never been reviewed before. One reason might be its price - over thirty pounds for a paperback - although the book is certainly worth every penny of it. Another might be the existence of Kagan's one-volume condensed version of the whole war which I have yet to read.

About the Author
Atif M. Memon is an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science, University of Maryland, where he founded and heads the Event Driven Software Lab (EDSL). Researchers at the EDSL study issues of design, development, quality assurance, and maintenance of such software applications. He designed and developed the model-based GUI testing software GUITAR, which operates on Android, iPhone, Java Swing, .NET, Java SWT, UNO, MS Windows, and web systems, and leverages a resource cloud for test automation. He has published over 90 research articles on the topic of event driven systems, software testing, and software engineering. He is the founder of the International Workshop on TESTing Techniques & Experimentation Benchmarks for Event-Driven Software (TESTBEDS). He also helped develop the workshop on Experimental Evaluation of Software and Systems in Computer Science (EVALUATE).

He is the Serial Editor of Advances in Computers, published by Elsevier. This series, since its first volume in 1960 and now the oldest series still being published, covers new developments in computer technology. He is an elected member of the Steering Committee of the International Conference on Software Testing, Verification and Validation ICST, the largest conference on software testing. He serves on various editorial boards, including that of the Journal of Software Testing, Verification, and Reliability. He has served on numerous National Science Foundation panels and program committees, including ICSE, FSE, ICST, WWW, ASE, ICSM, and WCRE. He is currently serving on a National Academy of Sciences panel as an expert in the area of Computer Science and Information Technology, for the Pakistan-U.S. Science and Technology Cooperative Program, sponsored by United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

He has a joint appointment in the University's Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS). He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in Computer Science in 2001, and started at the University of Maryland soon thereafter. In 2007 he was a visiting scholar at the Institute of Software at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a visiting researcher at Tata Research Development and Design Centre.

About the Author
Patrick J. Carnes is a nationally-known speaker on addiction and recovery issues. He is the author of Out of the Shadows, Contrary to Love, A Gentle Path Through the 12 Steps, and Don't Call It Love. He is the clinical director for sexual disorder services at The Meadows in Wickenburg, Arizona. Carnes is the editor-in-chief of Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention, the official journal of the National Council of Sexual Addiction/Compulsivity, an organization for which he also serves as a board member. He also serves on the national advisory board of the American Academy of Health Care Providers in the Addictive Disorders.

A solid companion guide to addiction therapy

I used this book in conjunction with a therapist, as I felt the public addiction help meetings were not helping me to focus on the most important issues that I did not want to deal with, or express in a public help meeting. The author makes clear that you should work through the steps as you are able to. Keep making progress as much as you can, and review previous chapters too. You will likely have set-backs and relapse, but do not give up trying and making progress. I do not see this book as a way to avoid going to self-help meetings, or avoid individual/marital therapy. You will need the help provided from very good external support people,even though you may feel that you can't depend on others. This book is a very helpful guide to help you keep making progress. Well organized, and very helpful commentary from the author. The 'work' sessions in the chapters will get you to understand and face some of the key 'myths', the untruths, you have falsely believed about yourself, and why you keep shooting yourself in the foot with life decisions. You must admit to yourself several truths: That your life is out of control, that you can't resolve it on your own, and you need help from someone who is trained to help you uncover some painful issues that have held you back for years (or decades). Best wishes to you, and don't give up trying.

A book that acts as a guide through some of the most turbulent phases of life. Much of this kind of books are needed, and the research in this field should be given importance. At a first glance the concept projected seems like power taken away from one's own, but the author patiently explains how empowering this actually is. The process, however, needs a lot of practice, and a good mentor in one's locality. Having compassion on people haunted by several types of fears helps them get rid of the social shaming of asking for help, and in turn helps the subject developing further.

Many people know about the twelve steps to addiction recovery. Many suffering with addictions participate in Twelve Step groups. This book serves as a guide to approaching the twelve steps from a perspective which leads to a greater understanding of addiction and thus a deeper interaction with each of the twelve steps. Its workbook format allows the reader to answer basic, but important questions about their addiction and addictive history. It helps the reader build the essential inventories found in the twelve steps. I would advise that this book is an essential guide book for the addict struggling to take a meaningful, deep approach to the twelve steps. It is a great tool for the twelve step addiction sponsor, who wants to offer a systematic, through approach to addiction recovery. Wonderful!
