Although the book should be most useful to gynecologic residents-in-training and practicing gynecologists, it will also be of use to general surgeons who perform gynecologic operations and to all physicians who perform ambulatory gynecologic procedures. The operative techniques depicted are currently used procedures based on the newer concepts of wound healing and suturing, utilizing mod­ ern surgical instrumentation. When several techniques are available, the author's personal preference is described. This book is required reading for the open Yale course on Roman Art and Architecture. It is a perfect compliment to the course or it could very easily be read without the course. I intend to travel to Italy to see these beautiful sites and I will certainly take my book with me.

I found this book to be an excellent, even masterly, coverage of the subject. It is bound by its period, but still gives a sense of the continuity of architectural development from the native Italian, Etruscan, Hellenic and particularly the Hellenistic influences on the growth of Roman architecture into and through the Imperial period. It also covers the continuity of architectural styles, technologies and traditions into the Romanesque period.
I liked the way in which the author covered the regional influences on architecture in the various parts of the Roman world, especially contrasting the East, with its substantial existing traditions, styles and techniques, with the "frontier" type of situation in the West, where the new introduction of Roman technologies and styles all but eclipsed those which had gone before.
The author's writing style seemed the relaxed intimations of a man comfortable with his mastery of the material and without the need to prove himself. I found a particular enjoyment in the tone of someone enjoying passing on the details of his favourite subject.
I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone interested in the way the Romans solved some of the universal challenges of a built environment.

Honestly I had no expectations. First I came across the writers IG account. The idea of forgotten women was enough for me to follow him. Then it became apparent this was a book he was working on; so I became intrigued. When I saw that you could pre-order it sounded like a good idea. So I did.

This book is big and heavy. The information is expansive and easy to follow. There are art comments explaining the illustration choices. I was blown away to say the least. It is so exciting to get a good book. And this was more than that for me. This is a book that will bring on many conversations for my children and I. This is a book that I have always needed and didn't know it. It's beautiful. Yes some of the stories are... well they are factual. There is a rating system to help incase you are worried about appropriateness. History isn't always pretty and it's best not to pretend it is.

Currently I have to hide to read it as it is an Xmas present for the children and I cannot wait to share it with them... and maybe I won't. Did I mention how excited I am!?

engaging and detailed stories make it hard to put down

I've enjoyed reading the Rejected Princesses blog ever since it came out, and so pre-ordered the book. The book is amazing - the stories are so detailed, meticulously researched and written in an engaging and entertaining style. The accompanying full-page illustrations reflect the attention to detail put into telling the stories - I enjoy reading the notes on the meanings behind all the items in the drawings as well. The ratings/warning icons for each story's content are less relevant for me - a grownup lady - but I can see how useful they would be for parents in choosing the appropriate level for their kids. It's a nice addition I hadn't considered that makes the book accessible for a younger crowd.

And finally - of course, the stories. I hadn't heard of almost any of these amazing and crazy ladies before. Their stories are extremely varied and come from all over the world, and provide insight and inspiration for a wealth of character traits - love, valor, strength, perseverance, innovation, and more. There are no boring tales. The book would be a great gift! (for me, it was a gift to myself.. :D)

A Letter from Author Blake Mycoskie

People often ask me what I consider my goal to be at TOMS. The truth is that it’s changed over the years. When we first began, the goal was to create a for-profit company to help the children that I met in a small village in Argentina. And that objective to give new shoes to children in need continues to be a powerful driver for me and everyone else at TOMS.

But recently my personal mission has changed. Today, I would say that my goal is to influence other people to go out into the world and have a positive impact, to inspire others to start something that matters, whether it’s a for-profit business or a nonprofit organization. I feel a deep sense of responsibility to share everything that we’ve learned from TOMS, so that others can learn from both our mistakes and the counterintuitive principles that have guided our success.

I would also like to share the stories of other social entrepreneurs, from all walks of life, who are taking that wonderful and courageous step forward, who are moving from thinking about doing something to actually doing it. Among many others, the leaders profiled in my book include Tony Hsieh (founder of Zappos), Scott Harrison (founder of charity: water), Lauren Bush (founder of FEED Projects), Eric Ryan & Adam Lowry (co-founders of method) and Tim Ferriss (author of The 4-Hour Workweek).

Like me, all of the people featured in the book faced insecurities and fear when first starting out. All of us bootstrapped with limited resources, and made countless mistakes along the way. After reading these stories of success, I hope that you’ll realize that you already have everything you need to get started. You don’t need a lot of money, a complicated business plan, or a great deal of experience to get your idea off the ground. About the Author

In 2006, Blake Mycoskie founded TOMS Shoes with a simple business model: “With every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. One for One.” In 2011, TOMS launched its second One for One product, TOMS Eyewear, which with every pair purchased helps give sight to a person in need by providing medical treatment, prescription glasses, or sight-saving surgery. Mycoskie will be using 50 percent of his proceeds from this book to create the Start Something That Matters Fund, which will support inspired readers in their efforts to make a positive impact on the world.
 
When Blake isn’t working at TOMS, he spends his time reading, writing, fly-fishing, and participating in just about every board sport.

This absolutely renewed my confidence in starting my own business!

Blake's story is such an inspiration. I chanced upon this book by accident, when I was feeling down and experiencing business blues for my new startup. I was feeling disheartened so I wandered into to the local Boulder bookstore, Bookends, looking for some pointers. I went to the self-help section and as I was stooping down perusing the aisle, I noticed "Start Something That Matters" staring right back at me. I picked it up, started reading it and couldn't put it down! I ended up having to buy the book and one of the best things I could do for my business. Today, I still have my business and I've enjoyed the luxury of working from home, serving great clients and am working my way towards financial freedom. I've also built some amazing sites for some clients that improves the lives of others and this makes all the difference in the world. This book was one of my inspirations! Thanks Blake!

Start "Giving"

In the last 6-8 months I have read a lot of books on entrepreneurs who started small and then through all kinds of help, support, hard work and with some timely luck made it big. I had enjoyed reading Akio Morita's story of how Sony started and how through Sony, he paved ways for international business in Japan, which prior to Sony, was averse of doing any international business. I had read about how Michael Dell started with Dell computers from his college dorm room and then turned it into a multinational that it is now. I have read more than a few books on how Steve Jobs turned an idea into a big revolution that it is today from his home garage. All these entrepreneurs and more that I had read about had profits at the core of their business. Nothing wrong with it, after all that is what business is mainly about. Never though, had I heard of the concept of mixing a for-profit business with Charity until I read "Start Something that matters" by Blake Mycoskie.

Blake Mycoskie was a born entrepreneur, at the age of 29; he had already started three different businesses and was quite content with where he was. At this stage, he decided to take a vacation and so he went to Argentina. While there, he saw these amazing local Argentine shoes called "alpargeta". They were worn by practically everyone out there and the entrepreneur in him saw a potential market for those shoes back in USA. He parked the idea at the back of his mind and continued with his vacation. While visiting some villages, he came across kids who were living their lives with no shoes at all to wear. He researched and found about all the dreadful infections they were subjected to because of the lack of shoes. Then and there, Blake decided he wanted to do something about it and that is when he came up with the idea to start "TOMS" (....). TOMS refers to "Shoes for tomorrow". The idea Blake came up with was very simple. His company would start selling "alpargeta" shoes. For every shoe sold today, TOMS would donate a pair of shoes to kids in need tomorrow. The idea was noble but at the same time very scary as mixing money and charity was not something that was done much in USA. Blake however wanted to pursue this dream and so he did.

His journey was tough but in a period of "5" years after TOMS started, Blake was able to donate One Million shoes to kids in need. Blake goes all out in this book to explain and illustrate so many other such organizations who have taken to do something about the social issues around us. He goes on to explain how one can start with an idea no matter how small it is and then build on it over time and at the same time incorporate "giving" in their business strategy from the very beginning. He has given references to several tools and techniques in this book to run your start-ups in the least possible financial situation while ensuring that you are giving back to the society.

Personally to me, this was a big eye opener. I was stirred emotionally on more than a few occasions while reading the book as Blake narrated several of his interactions with the kids he saw. We take a lot of things we have for granted and never think about those unlucky few, who don't have their basic needs met. I am personally pledging to ensure that I incorporate "Giving" into my actions. I hope more readers take up to this book and follow the same path.

This book changed my life

This book changed my life. Inspired by Mycoskie's brilliant book, I wrote Your Mark On The World.

As a mid-career sabbatical, I was living in China, teaching business at South China University of Technology, and trying to decide how to spend the rest of my career. I made it a point to read several books that might help me find some direction, some focus and when I finished reading Start Something that Matters, I began to find some real clarity.

Of course, Mycoskie's story begins with the story of how he started Tom's shoes. The book is worth reading just to get that story. Who wouldn't want to launch a successful, $100 million business in a space as crowded as shoes? Reading the story allows you to understand how Mycoskie's world view informs his entrepreneurship to make him a more successful leader, to say nothing of his humanitarian bona fides.

The book combines interesting, personal anecdotes with sound business advice, leaving readers confident and ready to step out on their own to do something that matters. Mycoskie's style is a pleasure to read.

The book is a great read for anyone interested in business or humanitarian causes. It is a quick read and you won't confuse this with your Management 101 textbook--thank heaven. It's not a soup to nuts "how to" start a business so much as a treatise that will help you find the passion to do what you've always dreamed of doing. The book perfectly executes it's goal.

I absolutely recommend this book to anyone with an interest in social entrepreneurship, the fashion industry, marketing, charity or business.

This book goes into great detail in describing some of Calatrava's greatest architectural pieces. There are photographs (night and day shots) accompanying the CAD plans. It a great book to look through and learn from.

enjoyed this; picked up more towards the end

I read The Black Prism right after it was released and then I didn't get around to this book until a week or so ago. I remembered details about three characters (Kip, Gavin, and Dazen) and a little about luxin and drafting (the magic system in this series, if you haven't read the first one), and that was it. So I spent like the first 1/3 trying to play catch up. And you know? I still found this pretty enjoyable. I would still strongly suggest starting with book one, though, because there is a lot of background information (some of which I managed to retain).

There are a couple of different main POV characters and some short scenes from other perspectives. I'm a little embarrassed to admit how long it took me to understand the significance of the short scenes -- midway through book three! But they *are* important and they do relate to the overall narrative, so pay attention to them.

Gavin is one of the POV characters and he starts the book with a bunch of refugees for whom he's trying to find a home. He then goes around looking for something in the ocean (don't want to spoil anything, so I won't say what he's looking for). As you might expect, it's difficult to find one thing in a big ocean, and the search part drags (though Gavin's part picks up in interest and intensity after the search is over). He's also dealing with some rather large personal problems/secrets that hamper his various efforts.

Kip is another POV character. Gavin has insisted Kip go through Blackguard training (Blackguards are elite guards for the Prism -- Gavin, in this case -- and other members of the Chromeria, the ruling body of the Seven Satrapies). Kip, as you will recall, is overweight and out of shape and from a backwater area. On one hand, it's a rather traditional and trope-ish fantasy training school storyline, but there are a number of interesting side matters and Kip is easy to root for. He still likes to make wisecracks but he's not quite as funny as in the first book (when I remember laughing out loud several times). Kip's parts were my favorites, though.

Teia, a slave in Blackguard training, is a third POV character. She's partnered with Kip, but she has her own issues. She's constantly fearful for her position because of her slave status (slaves who pass the Blackguard trials are freed and their masters are paid large amounts of money). And she's interesting in that she can draft paryl, which I think is Brent Weeks's word for X-rays.

Liv was a friend of Kip's from the first book and she was taken captive by someone calling himself the Color Prince. He objects to the Chromeria's way of running things and is warring against them. Liv's scenes are the only ones where we see inside the Color Prince's camp.

One thing I will say about this book is that Weeks does a very good job pitting the sides against each other. He makes the characters supporting the Chromeria sympathetic (OK, maybe not Andross Guile, who is Kip's grandfather and Gavin's father). But Karris (another Blackguard), Commander Ironfist of the Blackguard, the White (another leader in the Chromeria), and Kip and his fellow trainees (at least the ones he is friendly with) are all good people.

But the Color Prince has some issues with the way the Chromeria does things (like the fact that slavery is allowed in the Seven Satrapies, and what happens with people who draft luxin "too often"), and he has a good point, as well. We sympathize with him less because we spend less time with him. But I think the confrontation in book four (due out next year) should be quite good.

I'm finally starting to be able to keep the different colors of luxin straight in this book. If I went back, I'd probably start to notice a lot of repetition (superviolet drafters are logical, etc.). But hey, it worked.

Overall, I liked the characters, some aspects of the plot were great even though they incorporated tropes, pacing got better as the book went on, and I am really starting to get immersed in the world of this book -- I went straight on to The Broken Eye (book three). This did end on a double cliffhanger, though, which was a little irritating. Definitely a fun series to pick up, though, and an improvement over Weeks's earlier series (the Night Angel trilogy).

Worth the wait....

Generally, I hate waiting a year or more for the next book in a series. Often it isn't worth the wait and I'm disappointed.

Not so with this one. I really don't want to give anything away; you need to read it. But I will say that having a main character that isn't the epitome of manly magic or sword-wielding perfection is refreshing and downright interesting. And I admire the skill of an author that can pull that off without making ..um...Breaker... appear pitiful. I was completely engrossed and didn't put the book down until I reluctantly read the last page.

And I have a few pithy words for Mr. Weeks in regards to those last pages. You're going to make me wait another interminable year for the next book, aren't you? I can't think of any words bad enough to express my feelings.

All I can say is "Quite the Ending". Only a Person Completely Steeped in Evil would leave us all hanging that way, so in spite of the monumental talent of Mr. Weeks, I have no choice but to assume he probably pulls the wings off of flies, considers golf a sport, and kicks puppies in his spare time.

Enjoyable But Also Frustrating

In my humble opinion, Brent Weeks is the MASTER of epic. He is better than any other author I know at creating larger-than-life heroes, who are charismatic as heck and still tremendously flawed and compelling people. He's also fantastic at coming up with fantasy worlds full of potential and then taking advantage of every little opportunity to exploit that potential.

I was looking forward to this book (a little fanatically, truth be told) ever since reading the first one last summer. I enjoyed every minute of reading it and couldn't stop thinking about it while I was away from it.

So why not five stars?

Much as I enjoyed this outing, I was also increasingly frustrated by it. For all that there's all kinds of *stuff* happening on ever page, not much that's plot-worthy actually *happens.* The characters do big and impressive things - sometimes shockingly awful things - and yet there are never any consequences and sometimes not even reactions from the other characters. I almost feel like, with a few exceptions, this entire book could have been skipped on the way to what (I trust) is the real meat of the plot and action in the next book.

Oh, and Kip. This is as much personal druthers as anything, but I did grow weary of Kip's POV. Aside from the fact that Gavin is always going to be more interesting, Kip's constant self-pity and self-deprecation grows tedious. I won't be at all sorry when he grows a backbone and *realizes* he's grown a backbone.

None of which isn't to say I still don't love Brent Weeks. He remains da bomb.

Abandoned by his father, neglected by his mother, shuttled between foster homes and a boys ranch for most of his formative years, a young man refuses to succumb to the fate that the world says should be his. Born the second of five children to a woman who not once had a name to write in the blank space left for father on her children's birth certificates, Alton Carter does not mince words as he describes a childhood full of violence and hunger and isolation. Early on, Alton decides he wants a "normal life" even if that means standing up to abusive relatives and being teased by his siblings and cousins. Along the way, he keeps an eye out for those who might help lighten the load, never losing hope that such people exist.

About the Author
A former foster child and police officer, Alton Carter is the director of youth ministries for the First United Methodist Church of Stillwater, Oklahoma. He is a graduate of Oklahoma State University. The father of two sons, Kelton and Colin, he loves spending time with his family, working with youngsters, and fishing. He makes his home in Stillwater, with his wife, Kristin. This is his first book.

An amazing story of survival and overcoming horrible odds. This book is of his life as a child through high school; however, because we know of this author as a strong, respected, outgoing, productive adult and influential community leader, it is even more remarkable to us that he has been able to rise far above the mistreatment he received growing up.

A story of determination and success following heart-breaking childhood living conditions!

This true story of the author's childhood and youth filled with abuse and neglect is appalling, heart sickening, an eye opener to what some children have to endure. However, it is also an amazing, inspiring, story of determination to rise above childhood adversity of the cruelest kind to become a compassionate, positive, Christian role model and advocate for youth today. Brace yourself for anger and tears followed by respect, hope and faith with this page turner!!

Amazing.

Im only 13 years old, and i think that this is truly an amazing book. My whole class read it, and there was nobody who had negative feelings towards it. I recommend this book to anybody who has been bullied, abused, or felt like nobody cared. Alton's story will change you.
