Brilliant!

This book is not only about guidelines for finding a new job, but it is also a brilliant pathway to discover different sides of your own self. I highly recommend this book to those who feel lost and are looking for a better life for themselves but don't know what should be their first step. This wonderful book helped me to overcome a state of melancholy and gave me the incentive to try again and keep moving forward. It is inspiring and shows the actual possibility of living a life happy!!! It is one of the best books I've read so far.

Great Guidance

I am taking a "radical sabbatical". I just didn't know it until I read this book. If you are looking to make a career change, but are unsure what you want to do this book is perfect. It doesn't provide lists of careers based on personality types or tests, it provides guidance on how to do the job research based on your interests. It helps you come to terms with possible salary changes and education requirements. I'm thoroughly enjoying the process and wish I'd found the books years ago or at the very least 4 months ago when I first lost my job.

Worth a read. No revelations or prescriptions, but a good set of questions to think on...

It's a lot of "obvious" advice, sure. But much like proverbs, quotations and other types of positive reaffirmation, one can never get enough of them. I think it gets the job done for its target audience. If you're looking for a push or a nudge into the wilderness that is "following your dream, not just your career goal", this book is a worthy addition to your psychological launchpad. The examples and stories are only mildly motivating but true value of the book lies in the set of questions the author asks you answer for yourself. If you take them seriously, they may go a long way toward identifying exactly what fulfilling work would look like to you. It worked for me, somewhat. It motivated me set aside time everyday to think hard about what I would call fulfilling work. The questions provide a decent framework. The process is meditative and introspective and requires a lot of emotional stamina. It may take a while. I don't expect overnight epiphanies and, I suspect, neither should most people.

I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because I don't think the book will resonate with everyone. For example, if you're married with kids and a mortgage and other responsibilities, some of the advice will seem impractical.

I don't know of any other book that covers these ...

I don't know of any other book that covers these crucial topics so thoroughly and in such depth. A wide ranging collection of essays, reports, and guides written by and for educators based on real, classroom experience. So much has changed in our experience and awareness of these issues in a very short time. This book covers all levels of education. I teach at the college level, and many of my students are ahead of me in their understandings of and the language around these issues. I'm grateful to have this as a reference.

INCREDIBLY MOVING SAGA OF HEROIC DUTCH FAMILY DURING WW II

This is an absolutely extraordinary book. Never have I read a book in which the spiritual beauty of the author so resonated throughout the story. The purity of heart that manifests itself in this inspiring saga of a heroic, Dutch family in Nazi occupied Holland during World War II is stunningly beautiful.

This is the true story of the Ten Boom family who, during the Nazi occupation of The Netherlands, upon seeing what was happening to their Jewish neighbors and friends, asked themselves this age old question "If not us,...who; if not now,...when?" They answered it, ultimately at great cost.

The Ten Booms were devoutly Christian and lived a simple life. The patriarch of the family ran a watch shop that had been in his family for a century. Some of the family members, the author among them, worked there, selling and repairing clocks and watches. They also lived in the house in which the shop was located.

When the Nazis occupied their country, the reality of what it meant slowly dawned upon them, as they saw the treatment given to their fellow Dutch citizens of the Jewish faith. Moved by their plight, the author at the age of fifty, together with other members of her family, including their father who was nearly eighty, became active in the Dutch underground.

When it became clear to the Ten Booms that Jews were being targeted for deportation and death, they had a false wall constructed in the author's bedroom, thereby creating a secret room. There, they would hide the terrified Jews who were staying with them, in the event of a Nazi raid upon their home.

Eventually denounced by someone to the Nazis, the Ten Booms were arrested and their home raided and torn apart by the Gestapo, in their search for the Jews they believed to be hiding there. At the time of the raid, the Ten Boom home was filled to capacity with Jews in hiding. So well concealed was the hidden room that had been created by the erection of the false wall, that these poor, terrified Jews managed to escape detection.

The Ten Boom family did not fare so well. It was upon their arrest that they learned first hand of man's inhumanity to man, and their faith was put to a test that they had never dreamt possible. It was faith, however, that sustained the author in what was to be her darkest hour of deepest despair. To find out what happened to the Ten Booms, read this book. It is the story of an incredible family, who had the courage to put their convictions to the test.

This book stands so far above the pack that five stars is not a high enough rating.

Of all the books I've ever read, this is the one that has remained in my mind and my heart for many years. Corrie Ten Boom is a real life super-hero. This unforgettable lady survived the horrors of life in a concentration camp and went on to write a book that has reached out and touched hearts and souls around the world. I do not know or care if this book is "well written" because it is what she has to tell you that matters. You will weep as you read this book, you will look at your world with new eyes and you just may find the light of your faith rekindled. If you want a book that touches your very soul and just may change your life, read this one.

The Inspiring Story Of A Real Family

I've been aware of this book for a number of years, and finally read it when my friend Ann said I was missing a great story. Now, after reading it, I'm encouraging everyone to do the same.

The story begins in 1937 when a Dutch family is preparing for the 100th birthday of the family shop, Ten Boom: Watches. Flowers are being delivered and friends are calling to help celebrate the day. The conversation centers around Germany and the Jews who are coming to Holland for asylum. The Ten Boom's and their guests could not have foreseen what was to come. Their world had changed.

This is the autobiographical story of Corrie Ten Boom and how she and her family worked for the Dutch underground movement during World War II. The family were Christians and took a very strong stand against the Nazi persecution of the Jews. Corrie's father, a kindly, religious man, summed up his thoughts on the Nazis by saying, "I pity them Corrie. They have touched the apple of God's eye."

Corrie and her sister, Betsie were two ladies aged 45 and 52 years of age, respectively. They are the unlikely heroines of this story. Never married and rather innocent of the world, they proved the old saying that "you can't tell a book by its cover." Both sisters risked everything they had including their lives to save people they didn't even know.

In today's world of "me first", it's so encouraging to read a story of a family that truly lived their faith and practiced the Golden Rule.

About the Author
Karim Khan, MD, PhD, FACSP, FACSM, Dip Sport Med (CASM) is Professor, Department of Family Practice, and Associate Member, Departments of Physical Therapy and Orthopaedics, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. Karim combines an active clinical sports medicine practice with a prolific research program related to tendinopathies, bone health, and exercise prescription for health.

Peter Brukner, MB BS, DRCOG, FACSM, FACSP, FASMF is a sports physician and Associate Professor in Sports Medicine at the Centre for Health, Exercise and Sports Medicine, University of Melbourne, Australia. Best Sports Med Book

I am a PGY4 in Physiatry (university of toronto) and this is the best sports medicine book I have. A must buy for anyone in a related field.
PROS: Well written, easy to ready, details physiology and explaniation with anatomy. Love the hard cover (makes it last).
CONS: Big, would have liked more physical exam tests and their sensitivity/specificity.
OVERALL: If you are thinking about this book, BUY IT. Everyone that I know that has this book has not regretted it.

Great for Primary Care!

I'm a third year FM resident, who bought this book as a reference and also to accompany me on an ortho/sports med rotation. I'm nowhere near to covering all of the material, but I have read a few of the chapters that I feel are more "high yield" (knee pain, shoulder pain, hand pain). These are great, and fit hand in hand with what I'm learning from the ortho doc I'm working with (she's hardcore...treated many high level athletes and has been the team doc for a few olympic teams).

Some of the chapters also offer photographs and descriptions of PT/strengthening exercises for certain conditions. I do wish they talked more about reading specific x-rays, and also about joint injections (maybe they do and I haven't gotten there yet??). The book comes with a subscription to their website, which is not yet up and running...the go live date keeps getting pushed back. The website it supposed to have videos of exams (there are also pictures with descriptions in the book), among other things).

Overall, I am very happy with this purchase. I think it will make a great reference for questions that arrise around patient care of sports med/musculoskeletal issues. Part of the book is organized by "regional problems, " (ie. where is the pain) which make it quick to look things up based on a patient's complaint.

Easy to find info

This is great for helping with clinical reasoning when presented with a "problem area". Chapters are grouped into areas of the body, and sorted into common clinical conditions. Tests are nicely described.
Some more anatomical pictures would be helpful, and I can't get the online component to work...

not my favorite way to learn the blues

I bought this book when I began learning fingerstyle, because of all the positive reviews. I can see how it could help you learn blues guitar, as it is organized in a very step-by-step manner. But I ultimately found it boring and stopped working with this book about 1/4 of the way through. Almost the entire book is comprised of exercises rather than songs--I guess you could call the exercises "songs," but for the most part they aren't musically compelling. Only at the end, at a pretty advanced level, do you get something that feels like real blues. The exercises are challenging for a beginner, and they do help build technique, but for me the discipline required to learn the techniques was too much in relation to the fairly weak musical payoff. Compare this to the approach of Stefan Grossman, who also organizes all of his teaching materials (book/CD combos and DVD's) to teach step-by-step buildup of techniques, but who starts right in with versions of real blues songs that are very fun and rewarding to play. If you are interested in learning blues and have a little experience fingerpicking, I highly recommend Grossman's materials (the DVD Fingerpicking Guitar Techniques is a good place to start). If you are brand new to fingerpicking, I recommend Mark Hanson's Book/CD combo The Art of Contemporary Travis Picking. It doesn't focus on the blues (the repertoire is a mix of folk music and blues in its more folky aspects), but it focuses on alternating-bass fingerpicking that you will need for many blues styles (such as Mississippi John Hurt), it begins with very basic techniques and builds step-by-step, and right from the start you are playing real songs. Once you're halfway or so through that book, you'll be ready to tackle the Grossman DVD. This path will get you to the same endpoint as Berle and Galbo, but with a lot more fun along the way.

The best introduction to fingerstyle blues

I got this book based on recommendations of other purchasers here at Amazon. What a great choice! This is a methodical, easy to understand and progressive book. What this means is that you start easy and build your way up, but you get so much as you go. If you are not able to read music, there is tab and good - easy to understand explanations of note values and time signatures and how to apply them to your playing. Each lesson and exercise builds on the one before and inspires confidence. This is well worth you money and time. At the end, you will be prepared to take on some of the Stefan Grossman material and build from there. The only negative that I have to offer is that my accompanying CD was defective - and the company that publishes this book would not make good on replacing it. What this means is that I will think twice before I buy anything from this publisher. However, this book - without the CD - is a treasure and one I will keep and refer back to over the years. Highly recommended.

Great introduction book to learning fingerstyle blues!

This is a great book because it breaks down the process of learning acoustic (fingerstyle) blues step-by-step, and shows you how to play the blues in the old Mississippi-blues and other related styles. It starts off with beginner techniques such as learning how to play an alternating bass, combining the thumb with the fingers, playing chords with this thumb/finger picking pattern, maintaining a steady rhythm, playing different beats, and moves into more complicated playing involving melody and blues notes, fretting hand techniques, picking hand techniques, different chord shapes, vamps, and singing the blues. The end of the book then contains 5 blues pieces: M&O Blues, Beekman Blues, Big Road Blues, 32-20 Blues, and Black Rat Blues.
The CD is a great accompaniment, because it allows you to hear the examples in the book, and really *listen* for that blues feel.
I highly recommend this book!

About the Author
Barbara J. Olexer has written more than twenty books and screenplays. She is a fourth-generation Oregonian; her formative years were spent in small farming towns and a backwoods logging camp. Barbara's life has been a tapestry of changes as she has lived and worked in some of the country's biggest cities, such as San Francisco, Hollywood, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. Her heart remains in rural Oregon. While her two grown sons and five grandchildren live in Oregon, Barbara lives in Columbia, Maryland with her husband and pug dog, Chad.

An enlightening look at an oft-ignored subject!

In THE ENSLAVEMENT OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN IN COLONIAL TIMES, author Barbara J. Olexer examines the subject of American Indian slavery. While she does trace the roots of American Indian slavery back as far as 1013, her discussion primarily focuses on the colonial period, particularly the 1600s and 1700s. THE ENSLAVEMENT OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN... offers an illuminating look at what, sadly, is a little-known subject. Given the dearth of books on this topic, Ms. Olexer's tome makes a welcome addition to the existing literature.

Starting with the Norsemen's "discovery" of America in the tenth century, THE ENSLAVEMENT OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN... explores the topic of American Indian slavery. What started as the kidnappings of individual American Indians eventually escalated into an American Indian slave trade, albeit on a smaller scale than the African slave trade. The trade reached its height during the 17th and 18th centuries, but had largely ceased by the 1780s. The reasons for the American Indian slave trade were many. Commonly, colonists instigated warfare between already unfriendly tribes, as a means of weakening their enemies as well as obtaining American Indian slaves "legally." Additionally, trading in American Indian slaves was another tool with which to rob the Indians of their land. American Indians were often tricked into slavery, ambushed by unscrupulous colonists, or simply kidnapped and "exported." By the end of the Revolutionary War, however, American Indian populations were decimated to such a degree that slavery was no longer necessary. Nor was it profitable; Africans were more plentiful and made for more obedient and resilient slaves.

THE ENSLAVEMENT OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN... covers both the scale of and the reasons underlying the American Indian slave trade. The book is divided into eleven chapters: It Began as Kidnapping; The Pilgrims and the Pequots; King Philip's War; The French in Canada; The English and the Westo; The Traders and the Neophytes; The Tuscarora and Yamassee Wars; The End of the Trade in Carolina; The French in Louisiana; The French and the Natchez; and Conclusion.

As you can see from the chapter titles, Ms. Olexer looks at the French as well as the English settlers, and also examines Spanish-Indian relations. A number of American Indian groups make an appearance, including the Huron, Eskimo, Pequot, Narragansett, Saconnet, Nipmuc, Mohegan, Iroquois, Seneca, Tuscarora, Westo, Powhatan, Catawba, Chowan, Yamassee, Cherokee, Creek, Chickasaw, Waccamaw, Natchez, Sauk and Fox tribes, as well as the Wampanoag Federation and the Five Nations. Geographically, the discussion concentrates on the north- and south-east of the United States. Several chapters are devoted to the Carolina region in particular.

Although schools and scholars are finally beginning to acknowledge our forbearers' brutal treatment of the Americas' original inhabitants, the subject of American Indian slavery still merits little attention. Indeed, I don't recall learning of the topic at all during elementary, junior, or high school. Unfortunately, few books exist that tackle this significant topic. Barbara Olexer's THE ENSLAVEMENT OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN... helps to fill this void, and makes a great addition to the history buff's bookshelf. It's a must-read for anyone interested in the American Indian experience or the history of slavery. An added bonus: the author donates a portion of the proceeds to the National Museum of the American Indian.

Essential Reading in American History

Barbara J. Olexer's book, THE ENSLAVEMENT OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN IN COLONIAL TIMES, should be required reading in our school's American History classes. She tracks the long interaction between `new world' explorers/settlers and various Indian tribes east of the Rocky Mountains; often providing information of later (seventeenth century) anti-Indian action and current remaining Native groups. Her discourse, based upon extensive research, paints a comprehensive picture of the actual aspects of European's relationship with Indians, beginning with the "Norsemen's discovery of America in the tenth century." Previously, the record of our country's background of Indian mistreatment has been ignored; or twisted to give an acceptable perspective of the struggle by so-called civilized newcomers against the indigenous population who were called "savages", "barbarous enemies" who, like others would, fought to protect their lives and livelihood, their culture and religious ways. By using quotes from both sides obtained from various archives, Barbara reveals the real savages with the attitude "that it appears visibly that God wishes that they yield their place to new peoples." These Indian nations and tribes who were to `yield' revered nature, had social structure, were peaceful, content, helpful and generous. One firsthand observation came from a colonist captured and released: "There was never any lack of food...they shame the Christians; are more generous...they keep their word exactly as promised. They are not avaricious, not so haughty, do not quarrel quickly. Among the young, also, I did not notice anything improper." This book is vital in establishing a true record of our nation's colonial past and early westward expansion.

Amazing Tribal History

Olexer does a good job of reporting the Pequot War, King Phillip's War, and the numerous Indian wars that followed. At times my reading was impeded because I kept shaking my head, thinking, "This is amazing, why didn't I ever hear about the Indian slave trade before?" One special feature of the book that I liked is that she gives a brief (very brief) account of the many tribes that are still extant. A lot of them are prospering and some are flourishing. The Pequots, for instance, after being reduced to three survivors on their reservation, have recovered sufficiently to have donated fifty million dollars to the new National Museum of the American Indian.
