The artist's statement that "you work until the whole surface has an expressive intensity equivalent to what you have before you, converted into a pictorial reality" conveys something of the labor he brings to his works: López García is not a prolific artist, and as a result shows rarely (his 2008 exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, consolidated his already strong audience in the U.S.). His drawings and paintings are equally esteemed, but until now, the drawings have never been the subject of a monograph. All of the work in this superbly designed publication has been carefully selected by the artist's daughter, Maria; much of it has never been reproduced until now. Including 200 color plates and a moving text by the artist himself, it stands as a powerful testimony to López García's astounding achievement.
Antonio López García (born 1936) studied at the School of Art in Madrid in the early 1950s, and quickly became part of a nucleus of realist painters, such as Francisco López Hernández, Amalia Avia and Isabel Quintanilla. López García was the subject of Víctor Erice's 1992 film El Sol del Membrillo (The Quince Tree of the Sun), which closely chronicles the artist's attempts to paint a quince tree.

Antonio López García's Magic Shared

Antonio López García is one of the world's greatest artists, a painter and drawer who is less concerned with fame than he is with the truth of his creations. He is known to take extraordinary amounts of time to finish even the smallest drawing: his large paintings cover months to years of work. It is often been said that to appreciate an artist's skill and gifts first turn to the drawings. Drawings can be either preparatory sketches for a planned canvas or they can be simply captured moments in time, rendered perfectly to give not only a representation of the object but also an aura of the magic of being.

This book is a wonderful collection of many of Antonio López García's drawings - still lifes of small objects, figure studies, bare branches, flowers, toilets, sinks, - each rendered with a gentle honesty, and incomparable realism, never making the image more than it is, as López García believes everything we see has inherent perfection and beauty. The drawings are well reproduced and are accompanied by some of the artist's own commentary. He speaks as tenderly of his art as he practices it, giving reverence to the quality of light and the tranquility that he seeks to recreate in both graphite and paint. According to López García, 'you work until the whole surface has an expressive intensity equivalent to what you have before you, converted into a pictorial reality."

Beautiful!

An excellent overview of Antonio Lopez Garcia Drawings with beautiful reproductions and a refreshingly down to earth and rare essay by Antonio Lopez himself. The price is also very reasonable for a book of this quality. A must have for those who are fans of the work of the greatest living realist.

Stunning Work

This book makes you look twice - is it a photograph or is it really a drawing? Garcia's work is exquisite, showing his mastery of the pencil and of the line and of the subtleties of shade and shape. For anyone interested in the art and craft of drawing, I heartily recommend this volume - as well as the catalog of an exhibition in 2008 at the Boston MFA, which shows his work in color. Astounding volumes, both of them.

The Vatican's "Jesus Christ the Bearer of the Water of Life: A Christian reflection on the 'New Age' would be an absolutely fascinating document, even if it did not employ such section headings as "Good Vibrations" and "Magical Mystery Tour"!

As per that document, "John Paul II warns with regard to the `return of ancient gnostic ideas under the guise of the so-called New Age: We cannot delude ourselves that this will lead toward a renewal of religion. It is only a new way of practising gnosticism - that attitude of the spirit that, in the name of a profound knowledge of God, results in distorting His Word and replacing it with purely human words. Gnosticism never completely abandoned the realm of Christianity. Instead, it has always existed side by side with Christianity, sometimes taking the shape of a philosophical movement, but more often assuming the characteristics of a religion or a para-religion in distinct, if not declared, conflict with all that is essentially Christian'.(6) An example of this can be seen in the enneagram, the nine-type tool for character analysis, which when used as a means of spiritual growth introduces an ambiguity in the doctrine and the life of the Christian faith....It must unfortunately be admitted that there are too many cases where Catholic centres of spirituality are actively involved in diffusing New Age religiosity in the Church"

It documents how the history of frontier expansion and environmental struggle in the region is linked to Brazil’s position in an evolving capitalist world-economy. It is shown how Brazil’s effort to become a developed country has led successive Brazilian governments to devise development projects for Amazonia. The author analyses how globalization has led to the expansion of international commodity chains in the region, particularly for mineral ores, soybeans and beef. He shows how environmental organizations have politicized these commodity chains as weapons of conservation, through boycotting certain products, while other pro-development groups within Brazil claim that such organizations threaten Brazil's sovereignty over its own resources.

Best book for pug owners

We have owned a total of 7 pugs over the last 50 years and have fostered many more. This book should be required reading for all new pug owners as it tells you in simple language how to raise, care for, and love a pug. This book is not for pug breeders. If you want to know why, check your nearest pug rescue.

I learned more about finance from this amazing comic book than I learned in a semester class in college. The rating doesn't really apply to me - I ordered this for our electricians here at the water plant. All I can tell you is that the item came quickly, as promised by Amazon.

Our organization has a career ladder for advancement in the ranks plus a bonus paid when our electrical staff gets their Journeyman or Master Electrician certification, and a bonus again for renewing their certifications. It was for this purpose that I ordered the book.

The book references tables that are not provided within the book, which is really frustrating. The illustrations and explanations are helpful, but you will still need to buy the official NESC from IEEE.

Excellent ES&H Basics

I have worked in the Maintenance world as a mechanic, supervisor and engineer for over 40 years. I have had the luxury of having very knowledgeable ES&H folks to keep me in compliance with the myriad of regulations. I recently formed my own company and was hired as a consultant. The company asked me to bring they're existing ES&H procedures up to date. I soon realized I needed information sources. I used the internet as a major source for procedures. However, I discovered that I really needed to get to the basics of ES&H to develop a comprehensive plan to ensure that I had all of the ES&H fields covered. I started using this book as soon as I received it. It is an excellent resource for exposing to and reminding of, even an experienced individual, the basics of the massive world of safety. Great Confidence builder

This is a wonderful novel for Spanish I students in High School. I could even use it with 7th and 8th graders, I believe. We use it during the summer to keep their Spanish abilities active, and also to build confidence and comprehension. This book does many things for a student: 1) builds vocabulary 2) improves comprehension level 3) motivates students to find out "what happens" 4) provides a new way to increase Spanish knowledge.

As a teacher of ages 3 to 18 year olds, I use excerpts from these books here and there, and use them for a Summer Spanish reading program each summer. Great idea and execution!

I would agree with the other review that it's probably a bit too easy for Spanish III students. In my Spanish III classes, I use the classics like Don Quixote or another classic, not a contrived teaching novel.
