A thought-provoking read!

I first became aware of Mike Mahler's work back in 2008/2009 as I got interested in kettlebell training. I never really stuck with the kettlebells, but I got on Mike's mailing list.

A few weeks ago, I got an email that mentioned the podcast he does with Sincere Hogan also called 'Live Life Aggressively'. Listening through the back-episodes I learned that he'd written this book. I really enjoyed the podcast so I figured I'd see what the book was all about.

Interestingly, the first chapter of the book is about hormone optimization. That might seem odd for a motivational type of book, but he makes a good argument that if your hormones aren't balanced, success in other parts of your life will be elusive. Most of the rest book addresses significant barriers to what has been called 'the good life' or 'success', although he doesn't necessarily define success as simple material wealth. He returns to the theme of career happiness a few times over the course of the read and to good effect! It actually inspired me to finally start studying for my massage therapy national exam (I completed massage therapy training in the 90s but only got licensure for the state in which I was practicing at the time. I've wanted to quit my current career and do massage therapy again for quite a while but have been stalling about surmounting the barrier of the national exam). Any book that inspires purposeful direct action on a goal is a good book, in my opinion!

The author goes in some directions that may make you uncomfortable, but one often becomes uncomfortable when facing things we may not want to acknowledge about ourselves or our lives. Shrinking away from those topics is a sure-fire recipe for mediocrity.

Worthwhile even with flaws

I respect and trust Mike Mahler. I like and recommend this book despite flaws that, in the end, don't matter much.

Other reviews have described it as "brutally honest," but there's no brutality in it. Just straight talk, like from a brother or friend who will tell you what you need to hear when others are afraid to say it or just won't bother.

I have a few points of disagreement:

1. The book would have benefited from professional editing. It's good but it could be better.

2. Mahler is absolutely right about the necessity of eliminating emotional stress for health and strength, but he doesn't address situations in which "cut and run" isn't the answer. Given his high standards for integrity, I'd like him to write about that.

3. He's also right about not accommodating others when their desires are illegitimate. He doesn't consider situations in which you might choose to accommodate another person's wish. Maybe he meant only situations in which you wouldn't and shouldn't choose to go along, but it comes off sounding as if it's OK to be a snot.

These issues don't stop me from giving the book four stars. If they were addressed in a new edition I'd give it five.

Nice Job Mike !

I enjoyed Mike Mahler's book ( Live Life Aggressively ) however I think I ended up liking Mike more. What an astute, well grounded guy......and such insight for someone so young ! I bought Mike's book because I am very active in regards to working out and nutrition .......I am in my late 50s and am in damn good shape so I understand from where Mike speaks.......It will change your life, It will change who you are and how others see you. Mike makes the statement that some chapters are long and some are short and some you may want to skip, and I found that to be true. But from my perspective the book got better as I moved along, and very good near the end. As I stated before Mike seems to have great insight to life's ups and downs, of which I can attest too, and seems to be spot own. Towards the end of the book there is talk of happiness, integrity and knowing thy self, which all comes about as we move through this life and how life lessons are only really taught during the difficult times, when character is built and challenged. I agree with just about everything Mike has to say, I just don't know how he has managed to learn at 36 what has taken me over 50 years to learn. As I said at the top " Nice Job Mike " I would be proud to know you. Gary Holmes

Moravec, a professor of robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, envisions a not-too-distant future in which robots of superhuman intelligence have picked up the evolutionary baton from their human creators and headed out into space to colonize the universe.

This isn't anything that a million sci-fi paperbacks haven't already envisioned. The difference lies in Moravec's practical-minded mapping of the technological, economic, and social steps that could lead to that vision. Given the ever-increasing speed and memory size available to computer scientists, Moravec, who founded Carnegie Mellon's major robotics program, predicts that artificial intelligence will exceed human intelligence by 2050. He argues further that it is only a matter of time before we have computer simulations that will substitute for human functionality. (Yes, robots will take over the work force, but ultimately humans will benefit from a fully automated economy.) Moravec considers the various arguments, philosophical and otherwise, that have been made regarding whether computers can "think" and devotes a fair amount of coverage to questions Turing raised 50 years ago. His comparison of libraries to knowledge bases is simplistic?apparently, Moravec doesn't see any intellectual component to cataloging?but overall his interpretations are imaginative and his arguments interesting if not always convincing. Automation and quality of life

The best book on the future of robotics and automation! However, Hans believes robots are our wonderful mind children and should grow into powerful machines that evolve quickly past us. He is then horrified that some humans may transform themselves into machines and become very dangerous. Why won't his mind children be just as dangerous or more dangerous? At least a mind-transferred human might seek pleasure and fun. While Hans' logical AI robots make their galactic invasion plans!

Why not engineer automation to its pleasure giving limits? Instead of giving robots a high quality of life, design automation to increase EVERYONE quality of life and wealth on Earth???

Fantastic book

I learned so much from this book. It was uncanny how many times I found myself reading about exact situations and outcomes I have experienced as a people pleaser. I didn't realize that I was creating the negative outcomes I was experiencing through my own expectations and inability to say no. I wanted to make everyone happy and the opposite happened instead. I really recommend this book if you think you are a people pleaser or constantly find yourself going "above and beyond" for others but feel that they never come through for you.

Best book of architecture I ever own it.

This book is very inspiring, it reminds me that we as architects should return and take the paper and pencil to draw the ideas you have on your mind. It also reminds me on how humanity should live together with nature and how architecture should be thought from nature and the air. Ando also taught me that there's no other ornamentation more than the natural shadows, light and wind that comes from the atmosphere and enter into the building.

Highly recommended to everyone, it's not other book of images that you can find from the internet. It's like Ando's private diary shared to us.

An especially good section the writing on the proces-centric-versus the functional management style.

My favorite Bird Guide book for Southern Africa

I travel to southern Africa at least once a year on safari. I have found the Sasol guide book to be my favorite, and I use it extensively -- and I also own Newman's and Roberts (both good choices), as well as three other bird guide books for the region. If you have a little bit of birding experience, then this is an excellent book to consider. I may be wrong, but from personal experience, most southern African birders use either a copy of the Sasol, Newmans or Roberts.

Kindle version unfriendly

Would never have purchased the kindle version if I knew it was so user unfriendly. Why are there no links from the bird name to the appropriate page? Even if you know exactly what you are looking for, it takes forever to find the information. It is day lite robbery to sell the kindle version, I'll stick to my printed version.

Very pleased with ease

My family and I purchased this book for a trip to South Africa and Zambia last summer. We found it invaluable. Every day, whether on safari, walking through town, or driving along the highway we needed it to identify the most wonderful species of birds. The illustrations and organization were helpful, along with the photo index inside the cover. Our Zulu tour guide on Safari had one as well and said it was the only serious one to use. John Kihn currently teaches finance at the University of Vaasa in Finland. He has knowledge of and experience in both the academic and practitioner sides of the financial markets. In 1996 he received his Ph.D. in finance from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and has published academic articles on various finance topics, as well as holds a financial process patent. He has worked in the financial markets from 1985 through early 2008, with his last practitioner position being a Director of market risk at Merrill Lynch. In his over two decades of practical work in the financial markets he has held the following positions: hedging analyst, systems analyst/project manager, quantitative analyst, distressed credits analyst/manager, senior risk analyst, chief risk officer - fixed income, and portfolio manager. In short, this book represents a valuable set of knowledge based on John's unique experience and insight.
