Pretty good.

Pretty good.....I like it. One star off because I think maybe it's a tad overpriced, but I'm comparing it to the Family Medical Guide I bought at the same time & feel that was more bang for the buck. I do like this book though. Not really sure the surgery section is really something I would use. If I were having surgery, I could look up info on line. I bought this to help track symptoms and illnesses that hopefully I can diagnose & cure at home with home remedies. This fits the bill. I don't think it's completely exhaustive, but I imagine to cover everything you would have to have a whole set of encyclopedia sized books, which would just make it really hard to wade through and find what you are looking for. I think this combined with the info in Family Medical Guide will arm me to handle just about anything that can be taken care of at home.

About the Author
David Smith has been teaching introductory computer science classes for engineers at the Georgia Institute of Technology since 1997 when he retired from industry. Previously, he worked 31 years for Lockheed-Martin at their Marietta, Georgia, facility as a systems and software specialist with a focus on intelligent systems.  He was active in designing and developing software for the C-130J, C-27J, F-22 and C-5 aircraft, and was the technical leader of the Pilot’s Associate program, a $42 million research project sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

He has a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from Southampton University, and a master’s degree in control systems from Imperial College, London.

Started out using the MATLAB software with this book and I'd have to say that in combination with the book and my professor, the content is still a little too hard to understand if you don't have any previous programming background.

This book is written in JARGONS. If you are new to MATLAB, this book will NOT help you understand it. YouTube will do a better job and you will save you some bucks. I am in CS 1371 where neither the teacher nor this book helps FML.

With this volume, Fantagraphics reaches the midpoint in its project to reprint the entire body of work by R. (for Robert) Crumb, by far the most important and prolific of 1960s underground comics artists. The book collects strips from 1976^-77, when Crumb's bitterness and misogyny were no longer offset by the hippie ethos. This is not Crumb's most engaging work--that is found in earlier series installments--but it does indicate the directions his later career would take in its halfhearted stories featuring earlier characters and others that paved the way for the predominant alternative comics genre of the nineties, the warts-and-all autobiographical tale. Notably portentous among the latter are two brief stories drawn by Crumb but written by Harvey Pekar, whose own autobiographical approach was to be even more influential than Crumb's. With Crumb the subject of a new, critically acclaimed documentary film, libraries might do well to have this volume and its predecessors on hand for patrons who want to sample Crumb's work after seeing the movie. About the Author
Born in Philadelphia, R. Crumb is the author of numerous comic works and one of the pioneers of underground comics. His books include Kafka, The Complete Crumb Comics (17 volumes), The R. Crumb Sketchbook (10 volumes), R. Crumb Draws the Blues, The Book of Mr. Natural, The Book of Genesis Illustrated by R. Crumb, and many more. He lives in the south of France with his wife, the artist Aline Kominsky-Crumb.

Aline Crumb is an American underground comics artist and the author of Need More Love: A Graphic Memoir. She lives in southern France.

Harvey Pekar (1939-2010) was a comic book writer and author of the autobiographical American Splendor series, which was adapted into an Academy Award nominated film. Pekar was also a prolific jazz and book critic.

All the Robert Crumb collections are perfect,but this one is my personal favorite. The Mr. natural story is the best thing I read in years. I laughed so hard my head was hurting. Buy this collection now! Thank you.

This was a good series I thought I was ok . Short though, and I usually don't read short stories. The price should be less. For the number of pages you get. But I have to say, I did like it a lot that why I giving bad shots. I just wanted more. I went to look for book 4 and I just could not find it . It goes to book 5. I feel like I'm missing something. This bundle set is amazing although at the time I read the books I purchased them separately, but it's all good. I give the Ex White Soldier series five stars because it kept me interested from the very first story to the last and still wanting more. I can hardly wait the fourth book in the series. J A Fielding is an amazing author I have loved every story that I have read so far... The first series I read was Mr. White, I fell in love with characters and the same goes for this series... PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING!!!

Great book

I found about the Kyogokudo series through a recent anime called Mouryou no Hako, the second book in the series. The Summer of Ubume is the first.

I found the pace of the book to be rather slow in the beginning chapter, but once the investigative work started up, I couldn't put the novel down. I read a good majority of it in two days times.

His character Akihiko Chuuzenji purports, "There is nothing strange in this world." The author, Natsuhiko Kyogoku, attempts to meld what is considered supernatural with the real world. He writes about a post-WWII modernizing Japan that still holds traditional superstitions such as possessing people with spirits. The lectures given by Chuuzenji often attempt to debunk the idea of spirits as the cause of a particular misfortune or explain certain phenomena like clairvoyance as something very real and of this world. It can be heavy at times, but the theories that he throws out are interesting and makes one think.

I would recommend this novel to people who enjoy the mystery genre but are not faint of heart. The truth behind the case is rather gruesome and disturbing, and the author does not mind detailing it. It is also a look into Japanese folklore and spirits, a whole different culture.

I hope that Vertical Inc. will be able to translate the whole series, as this series is like nothing I've encountered before.

A risky translation reaps a great reward

This isn't exactly a popular title to be translating into English, and the subject matter should have made it an automatic rejection at the publishing house. Let me get this straight... this is a book about obscure elements of the Japanese occult... described for dozens of pages on end with exacting historical detail and explained via psychology and philosophy of the mind... and this detailed backstory almost takes up more of the book than the mystery itself? Who would read it?!

Well, under the hands of an able translator, this book is not only readable but quite exciting. It's an extremely memorable read and makes you think differently about paranormal stories. It's definitely a modern tale that appeals to one's skeptical instinct while still cranking up the suspense and the stomach-wrenching horror. Pick it up.

Bizarre mix of folklore, philosophy & crime

An ubume is the spirit of a woman who dies pregnant. Grieving for her dead child, she's always on the lookout for live babies to steal. She's having a field day in The Summer of the Ubume.

It's 1952, and Tokyo is still recovering from the war. Rumor says that several babies have gone missing from the Kuonji obstetrics clinic. Rumor also reports that a Kuonji daughter has been pregnant for twenty months! And her husband has vanished!

It will take a bevy of detectives to penetrate the multiple mysteries of the Kuonji family:

TThere's Enokizu, an eccentric visionary hired by a Ryoko Kuonji to find her sister's vanished husband. Then there's Kyogokudo - bookseller, Shinto priest and part-time exorcist who applies his penetrating intellect to the case. Then we have the narrator, Sekiguchi, depressive hack journalist with a mysterious desire to serve Ryoko. And finally there's Kiba, an actual police detective.

Early on, Kyogokudo lectures his friend Sekiguchi on reality vs. illusion. My attention frankly flagged after twenty-eight pages of this. But finally the pace picked up, and the plot became positively gothic, encompassing demons, deviants, possession, repression, colorful psychological aberrations and arcane herbal drugs. Amazingly, the author explains it all in terms of science, psychology and logic.

This is not my favorite Japanese novel. It's too over-the-top for my taste, but this very quality will appeal to many other readers. There's no doubt the book is inventive and original. And I did admire the author's passion for mischievous supernatural creatures. Natsuhiko Kyogoku is an expert on Japanese folklore.

About the Author

András Sóbester is a Senior Lecturer in Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Southampton. Beyond aircraft geometry parameterization, his research interests include design optimization techniques (in particular, evolutionary algorithms, machine learning systems and surrogate model-assisted search heuristics), high altitude flight (on fixed wings or balloon-borne) and the use of additive manufacturing techniques in aircraft design.

In terms of applying these technologies, his main focus is on the design of high altitude unmanned air vehicles for scientific applications. He leads the ASTRA (Atmospheric Science Through Robotic Aircraft) initiative, which aims to develop high altitude unmanned air systems for meteorological and Earth science research. Previous work includes research into reducing the environmental impact of passenger airliners through unconventional airframe geometries, undertaken as part of a Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) Research Fellowship.

András also lectures on the University’s Aeronautical Engineering undergraduate course – he leads the Aircraft Operations and Mechanics of Flight, and the Aircraft Design modules.

Alexander I. J. Forrester was born and brought up in Wirksworth, Derbyshire in the north of England. He studied for a Masters in aerospace engineering, followed by a PhD in computational engineering at the University of Southampton where he is now a Senior Lecturer.

He is a member of the Computational Engineering and Design Research Group and the Institute for Life Sciences. His research interests lie in the efficient use of simulation and experiments in design optimization.

Alex leads the teaching of engineering design across the University's Mechanical, Aeronautical and Ship Science first-year undergraduate courses. He also teaches design optimization to postgraduate level and supervises the University's undergraduate-developed human powered aircraft.
