About the Author
Roxana Waterson studied anthropology at New Hall, Cambridge, where she received her Ph.D in 1981. She has been doing fieldwork with the Sa'adan Toraja people of Sulawesi since 1978. She lives in Singapore where where she is Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the National University of Singapore.

Superlative

This book is an incredible work of ethnographic documentation as well as a tremendous analysis of traditional architecture. Waterson demonstrates how elements of culture, including gender, kinship, and cosmology are reflected in house design and use. The books is filled with photographs and illustrations, both by Waterson and from various collections. This book is a must for anyone interested in South-East Asia, residential architecture, or material culture.

Best book on clay sculpting

I bought this book (along with several others) while taking a class in sculpture. I found it to be the most informative and inspiring of any source, including my sculpture teacher. Using a series of close-up, detailed photographs, the book walks the student through the steps of creating a clay head. I followed them and made a good (for me) sculpture of a man's head and later a bust of a woman. I went on to make other clay faces, incorporated into mugs and pots. I don't pretend to be a great sculptor but, thanks to this book, I am able to make recognizable sculptures. The excellent directions include how to control surface texture using water and a brush; it is possible to make clay look like skin. If you are struggling to bring clay to life, this book doesn't just tell you how, it shows you how.

Wonderful photographic illustration of modeling

This is a book that shows you, via numerous photographs, how a clay sculpture is actually made. The book starts with detailed photographs of different types of sculpture that whet your excitement. It then moves to defining the tools and supplies that are going to used in the rest of the book. The greatest part of the book is the detailed step by step photographic illustration of what happens during each part of building the sculpture. It is really exciting to see how the model is transformed between its various stages. I learned more from this one book than 2 adult- evening sculpture classes(that cost $300+)from the local Art college. This book is worth the investment!

Should be called "Modeling A Head in Clay."

I got this book based on its good reviews - and it's got a lot of fine points, don't get me wrong. Lucchesi is a fine artist and I admire his talent and technique. But what drives me to knock off a few stars is that he takes an inordinate amount of time on refining the nostrils but detailed directions on blocking out the nose/lips/chin and how to do the ears are completely missing. (To me, these are the hardest parts and the main reason I wanted this book!) The instructions go from "here's the basic round shape of the head" to "put a coil of clay for the nose, lips, and chin" with a hard to follow picture and no other instructions on how to do it. Just telling me to "make an S-curve for the ears" doesn't help me, because there's more to it than that.

This book is simply how Lucchesi does this *particular* head, not head sculpting in general. Nothing is mentioned about proportions and very little is discussed about placement. There is zero discussion of how to do other heads - children, men, other ethnicities besides caucasian, older people - and very little about what to do with it once you've finished.

Several other complaints (that may only matter to sticklers like me): 1, The photographer/writer captions photos in the third person ("Here, Mr. Lucchesi attaches the ear" etc.), and for an instructional book, I find this a bit off-putting. 2, The complete black-and-white-ness of the book gives it a dated look. 3, Except for one instance, actual body part names are never used - vague descriptors like "the hollow above the lip" or "the fold of skin on the ear" are in its place. Philtrum and tragus should be known to those who are studying facial/head sculpture, and if not, then learning them should be a part of the educational process.

If you're looking for a comprehensive, easy to understand guide on making heads/faces in clay, I don't know that this would be it. I've seen clips from Philippe Farault's DVDs ([...]) and I learned more from them than I did from this book.

Gr. 6-9. Readers may not recall the name Bethany Hamilton, but after a glance at the cover photo, they'll recognize her as the girl who lost her arm to a shark while surfing. Hamilton tells her own story, though in many places the narrative sounds more like it's from an adult's perspective--perhaps from an adult coauthor. It begins with the moment a giant white shark chomps off her arm. She then goes back to discuss the events leading up to the attack and to describe what her life was like before the tragedy--home-schooling in a strong Christian household and lots of competitive surfing. Hamilton's account is suffused with her feelings for God and His impact in her life. Perhaps because of this relationship, she never seems depressed about her situation; in fact, she is surfing again. The inset of color photos offers further insight into Hamilton's life. Now, with the release of a docudrama on her life, she has added new material. Eleni Pappageorge's narration reflects the maturity Hamilton has gained since the first book. The most interesting passages are about Hamilton's family, their Christian perspective, and the bond formed by their shared love of surfing. The book would be an excellent choice for Christian families listening together—and, thankfully, there's nothing graphic about the shark attack. Interviews at the end provide an interesting look at the making of the movie."

About the Author
Bethany Hamilton, who YM magazine called the "Bravest Girl in America," has been surfing since she was seven years old. Since her shark attack last year Bethany has participated in numerous competitions and has received the 2004 Teen Choice award for Most Courageous Teen and the 2004 ESPY Award for Best Comeback Athlete.

Sheryl Berk most recently collaborated with Sopranos star Jamie-Lynn DiScala on her memoir, Wise Girl, and with Britney Spears on her autobiography, Stages. She lives in Manhattan with her husband, Peter, and their own little miracle, daughter Carrie.

Rick Bundschuh is a surfer, writer, and cartoonist, and serves as one of the pastors at Kauai Christian Fellowship. He makes his home in Kalaheo, Hawaii, along with his wife, Lauren, their four kids, a weenie dog, and a quiver of surfboards.

A Book with a Soul

Everyone may know already that this is the book about the 13 year-old surfer who lost her arm because of a shark attack. What they should also know is that this book was meant to be read by people of almost every age starting at 9 or 10 years old. Its language is accessible to fifth, sixth, and seventh graders. I'm actually using it in the classroom, and I have students talking about life lessons that Bethany shares: about being good team players, good losers, patient, and courageous in the face of adversity. In addition, we cover reading comprehension skills, such as main idea, author's purpose, drawing inferences, paragraph types, vocabulary, and grammar skills. Readers also get to know about Bethany's family, which is so important to her strong-willed nature. She goes into great details explaining how her parents and brothers helped develop her courageous character to be able to sustain a quite "tragic" incident. Courage in a 13-year-old child doesn't come out of the blue. Family and faith make the difference. This book is good not only if you plan to use it in the classroom, it's to be read by anyone who wants to find out the true source of courage. No need for self-help books with this one. It's down to earth and her description of family life and community life gives us the basics for overcoming obstacles and being successful - no quick gimmicks here. It's well written. The vocabulary and sentence structure of the book are appropriate for middle school students. Highly recommended.

Never give up!

Bethany is an inspiration to all! I'm glad I got this book and not the original. In this book she goes behind the scenes of her movie "Soul Surfer". At the end of the book she keeps a journal of the whole movie experience. From picking out the actors to the day the movie was released. It's so awesome to see whole process! I love how she was so open about her faith and just laid it out black and white, plain and simple. Even while filming the movie she would constantly tell the director(Sean McNamara) to keep her faith as the main focus of the movie. Not only did she want to be a inspiration to the world but she wanted to do it through Jesus Christ. This is a book for all ages. Even if she wrote this as a teenager she has the maturity and wisdom that goes way beyond that. I'm 22 years old and I found this book so compelling. I could not put it down! I to am a Christian and in this world we live in it so easy for girls to sell themselves out, especially being in Hollywood. Bethany said in her book that she wants to continue to stay humble and be a good example to young girls out there, even after being famous. How cool is that! Soul Surfer

This is the story of Bethany Hamilton, a surfer who lost her arm to a shark at the age of 13, and her struggle to return to competitive surfing. This story is told in her own words and has heavy Evangelical Christian overtones, which didn’t bother me as much as they normally would have given the inspirational nature of the story itself. This book is written for a younger audience, but I think people of all ages could benefit from the positive attitude and determination of it’s central character, and the themes expressed throughout about overcoming adversity and trying not to worry about things you can’t control. Inspiring story of triumph!

This first entry isn't completely horrible on its own

Vengeance in the form of "Stop Hitting Yourself," because this entire AP is designed simply to rationalize the previous AP.

This first entry isn't completely horrible on its own, but since it is part of a truly awful adventure path, there is really no reason to start on a path that will go so badly wrong.

The whole AP was a missed opportunity. It served only one purpose: to justify the success of the preceding AP, which itself was just created to incorporate one of the Pathfinder designer's PC's into the setting and make her efforts canon.

Both of Hell's Vengeance (on itself) and Hell's Rebel's are part of a terrible trend in Pazio publications, and should be avoided.
