Awesome Resource.

This directory provides a great starting point for marketing a screenplay. It is so helpful to get names and contact info along with preferred genres for individual production companies. Also, by listing which companies are open to unproduced, unrepresented writers, a lot of wasted queries are saved.

Good overall, but some info is inaccurate.

Good info in the front of the book re. the ins and outs of contracts, terms,etc. The back end is organized with the names of production companies and lists whether or not they accept queries, scripts etc. and how. The problem with the book was that at least 25% of the email addresses for the producers are wrong and come back as undeliverable. Otherwise, good info.

This textbook covers the basics of physiology excellently. Thetext itself is informative yet concise, the descriptions given areclear and it is very comprehensible. Suitable for peclinical years asa primary textbook and also useful for those wanting a quick reminderof the basics, anyone with a general interest in the subject will alsofind the book genuinely interesting and informative. Theillustrations/diagrams are clear, plentiful and complement and clarifythe text appropriately.
The book is divided into 15 chapters, eachone dealing with a specific "body system". The study aidsand self evaluation sections (a series of questions and answers) atthe end of each chapter highlight the key facts and are invaluable asaids to studying the subject. For those who want to extend theirknowledge further a suggested reading list also at the end of thechapter will prove very useful. The physiology of all the mainspecies is covered in great detail, with attention to avianphysiology, which is a major benefit since many general physiologytextbooks tend to overlook this aspect. The basic anatomy of thespecies is also reviewed when necessary, which again aids in theunderstanding of the topic(s) being discussed.
The book presentsinformation in an interesting and inspiring manner and with it's easyto understand text and informative illustrations it really is a mustfor everyone who wishes to learn about animal physiology.

The author has compiled a lot of feel good stories from the exceptional people of the world whose ideas worked out for them. That’s all well and good, however most of us don’t have the foresight to know whether our ideas are going to work out. The author throws in a few studies, but none of the findings are revolutionary or particularly relevant to the concept of getting ideas out into the world. I am really disappointed because I read this because I’m pitching one of my ideas to a crowd this week. The most insightful part of this book is when the author suggests the fail fast method of testing your ideas out. Don’t overthink or over plan an idea, just put it into action and learn from it. She also suggests reframing as a technique to think of solutions to problems and to get more creative ideas. The organization of this book does not flow smoothly. There is no lasting impression after reading this book. It is just some anecdotes from the author about what she thinks leads to creativity and innovation. It might be worth skimming if you are looking for inspiration.

Insight Out: Get Ideas out of Your Head and Into the World” Tina Seelig, is a book that I would highly recommend to anyone who is trying to be creative, innovative a personal or professional level. I am an undergrad student at the University of Baltimore majoring in International Business and this book was part of my required reading assignment in the entrepreneurship 300 class.

I was really not motivated to read the book as I thought it was just a book that I needed to read to get through the class. However, at my big surprise, when I started reading the book, it became so hard for me to put it down. Despite my busy schedule as a parent with a full-time job and going to school full-time, I was done reading the book in only 2 days. It was so inspiring and good to read.

In this book Tina, explains that yes they are people who are born with creativity but that does not mean that one cannot learn how to be creative. Contrary to what many things she argues in her book that creativity is a learning process that one can develop through what she calls the Envision cycle. Envision cycle has 4 steps:
Imagination stage: Envisioning things that don’t yet exist.
Creativity stage: Applying your imagination to solve problem
Innovation stage: Applying your creativity to come up with a unique solution that is new to you and the world
Entrepreneurship stage: Applying your innovation to bring it to the world. This requires great persistence and being an inspiration to others. The reason she calls it a cycle is because once you get to the entrepreneurship stage, you begin to inspire others and as a result, they also start their own cycle, etc.
Overall I really enjoyed reading this book.

Great Read for Entrepreneurial-Minded People!

Overall I found this book to be very thought-provoking and inspirational; a definite read for any aspiring entrepreneur or student interested in entrepreneurial studies. I was not previously familiar with Tina Seelig or any of her previous works, but am now curious to read some of her other works and dig a little deeper into who she is. This book was assigned to me as part of my Introductory Entrepreneurial Experience class at the University of Baltimore – an enhanced survey course. I can honestly say that what I liked least about the book truly wound up being what I enjoyed most! She didn’t give you the answers to any pre-conceived questions you may have already had; she didn’t tell you that you would be creative if you did…Through her use of her own personal real-life experiences – both successes and failures – as well as an infusion of other well-known business personalities’ experiences, Mrs. Seelig was able to show that everyone has the ability to bring forth valuable insight, innovation and unimaginable creativity. Her book identifies and simplifies cornerstone tools that anyone can use to delve deeper into themselves to bring forth value from within: tools like reframing your perspective on people and situations, using unlikely solutions to find viable solutions, value in experimentation, recognizing motivation and learning how to identify signs of physical and mental stress and when to take a step back to care of yourself. While I’ve intentionally placed my entrepreneurial ideas on hold, I’m now eager to look at them again through fresh eyes.

Great Range

Spectrum 18 is the first of the Spectrum series that I have purchased. I'm presently in the market for fantasy artists, and I figured the Spectrum series would be a good place to start.

The book is well designed and bound. The image quality is high, and the nicely organized artist directory in the back is a nice touch. The editors have offered an excellent range of works, from acrylic models and landscapes, to more conceptual and abstract pieces. The efforts of J.S. Rossbach, Sam Weber, James Gurney, Jon Foster, and Bruce Holwerda's were especially captivating--and Dan dos Santos' contribution was just plain fun.

Having been away from this genre for a while, I was struck my a noticeable decline in the number of more epic scale SF artwork. I don't fault Spectrum 18's editors for this, however. Perusing sites like DeviantART reveals nothing better. It seems that the entire field is in a bit of a decline. I found myself returning to National Geographic's Our Universe (Gallant, 1995) and Doherty's 1980's TOR commissioned artwork to reminisce.

I guess that means I am getting old. :/

Eye candy!

If you're into seeing current fantasy, surreal, (dark) and/or science-fiction art this series is a must have.

I own many of the 18 Spectrum books (one put out each year) and find myself returning to them over and over to look at all the incredible art.

There is an introduction and a few features in the beginning of each book but the images reign supreme.

Other than a credit and brief description of the image (artist, medium, client etc) it is simply page upon page of jaw dropping digital and traditional paintings (and a few photo-manipulations).

There are also sections in each book devoted to sculptures (in mediums of all kinds) that fit the categories above.

The only downside is that some of the images need to be printed fairly small, so I keep a magnifying glass handy if I really want to do some study.

If you have the $$...you'll probably want to start adding these books to your collection.

Great art book!

I love this book! normally with spectrum books there only 10 or so pages of art that I really like, and then there is some art that seems repeated or it is just not as special to me, but in spectrum 18 you can find a lot of really good art, page after page we were shocked and very inspired by what we were looking at. Really happy with my purchase!

I love D&D, so of course the title also grabbed ...

I first heard about this book on Jeff Burk’s Jeff Attack’s podcast. He was interviewing the author, and I quickly zoned in on the fact that this is a weird fantasy novella combined with one sassy drag queen’s crazy antics. I love D&D, so of course the title also grabbed a hold of me. The problem is I found more interest in the author and the idea behind the novella than the actual content within. There are a decent amount of hilarious scenes, and I did find myself thoroughly enjoying the protagonist - Sleazella, but I still did not find myself hooked on the novella like I wanted to be. I believe for me the main issue came down to length. I just felt like there were too many good ideas that did not have enough time to develop into anything; for example, the fornication war.
Yet, I did find my time with Sleazella to be enjoyable. What can I say? I enjoy strange tales, and at its heart THIS is a strange tale. I give this little book three out of five stars, it's done well, and it has plenty of good ideas, I just did not find them fleshed out enough for my taste. With that said, I will definitely be picking up future MP Johnson novels because the talent is there, I just need a longer tale to fill in that hunger this book left me

Hilarious, Gross, and Sexy...

MP Johnson should be writing for television or film; a lot of writers get this compliment from reviewers, but Johnson has found a comfortable niche. It’s a rare gift for a writer to be able to sustain a consistent level of humor and originality through a narrative without losing a reader’s interest. While some of the best bizarro novellas are parodies and satires, MP Johnson proves that he is among the best in the new wave of bizarro fiction writers. (In case you’re wondering, MP Johnson’s book is pretty gross, with lots of swords and sorcery action).

The challenge many bizarro novels face is the “bizarre” factor; how long can a story retain its sense of originality without devolving into a relatively boring story, once the bizarre has worn off on the reader? The secret is this: an infusion of heart and character in the storytelling, and Johnson delivers. The best comedies are able to keep their audience in the same fashion, and it is here where I should draw comparisons between MP Johnson and the folks who directed Napoleon Dynamite (they made another cool movie but I can never remember the name, and I refuse to Google it). We have a genuine “weird” factor, but at the heart of the story the protagonist faces an internal struggle. It is here that I must also compare MP Johnson to Carlton Mellick III, who has also applied this mechanism to good effect in his bizarro work.

MP Johnson has transformed the “hero’s journey” concept into an entertaining, hilarious ride that gives you a chance to experience something new on every page, something that only a few bizarro authors can achieve. Johnson managed this same feat in his previous novel, but the difference is the neatly-characterized quips and struggles Sleazella experiences, which continues to lend the story a sense of authenticity without losing its ability to keep the reader involved. Johnson is an entertainer, storyteller, and bizarro craftsman. The other reviews and the synopsis will tell you what this book is “about”; my intention was to tell you what you would experience.

This book is EVERYTHING!

There are few books that can make me blush. This is one of them. It's not for the faint hearted. It's gorier, weirder, and more perverted than any other book I've read. In short, it's perfect. It made me giggle with glee, gag, and guffaw. It had echoes of John Waters, Divine, and Troma, but in a far more streamlined and modern way. It's a short read too. As a weird fantasy nerd and drag aficionado, I cannot recommend this book enough.

Less is more: the ascetic culture of a low-cost retail giant

This book is the untold inside story from a former executive of German retail discount giant Aldi. Some of the advices that I recall from the German edition are the following (they are all interrelated):

ASCETICISM AS A BASIC PRINCIPLE. This word is usually connected to people avoiding physical pleasures and comforts, esp. for religious reasons (e.g. monks). In this context, it's more focused on what you can do without: headquarters, external market study, management consultants, and highly complex information technology. Instead Aldi focuses on a simple price strategy (everyday-low-price), undifferentiated product assortment, and avoid luxury.

THRIFTINESS AS A GUIDING PRINCIPLE. Everybody's talking about cost consciousness, but at Aldi this is second nature. There's a continuous avoidance of unnecessary costs on all levels.

INTERNAL RECRUITING OF HIGH-LEVEL MANAGERS. This principle is also recognised in bestseller "Good to Great". It's also a strong signal to internal candidates that they can expect to be next in line ... so be patient, you're time will come. The principle makes sure that top-managers fit the company culture. The negative effect is that you occasionally will be lacking the fresh eyes from outside.

LIVE THE DECENTRALISED ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE. Aldi believes that the most efficient enterprise exists, when the overall direction set by the central unit is clear and remainder of the decisions are left to the decentralized organization - closer to where the action is.

MAKE A VIRTUE OF A NECESSITY. Many firms focus on doing some things unusually well. That's not necessary. The best service is often just doing the obvious and necessary tasks in a simple way.

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENTS. Instead of believing in huge cost cutting exercises or grandiose concepts like business process reengineering, Aldi believes in all employees' ideas to reducing costs. They are close to day-to-day work and can best evaluate what needs to be done to continually make things simpler and less expensive. This idea is closer to the [Japanese] quality concept of continuous improvement (evolution) than any [American] management fads on cost reduction based on organizational revolutions or merger-mania.

STICK TO YOUR KNITTING. Do only what you can do really well. Retailers are to trade with consumers; producers are to produce. Don't diversify, stick to the core business. Concentration is important for efficiency.

NO PUBLIC APPEARANCES. The attitude is that the public information is useful only to the competition. The managers' self-manifestation won't bring any competitive advantage for Aldi. This principle probably only works, since it's a private company. In the brave new world of war for talent and capital, this attitude probably will have to be adjusted.

SIMPLICITY IN PRACTICE. Avoid strong central staff and a big headquarters. The practice in the line of business is much more important than any theoretical staff work. Line managers do all special tasks. Focus on lean organizational hierarchies, clear decision authority, clear targets, and simple execution.

The INSIDE story

Brandes worked as a ALDI director and set up ALDI in Holland amongst other things. I read the book in German and it is great. A must if you work in retail. Brandes worked at Aldi and wrote this book to strengthen the company's "institutional memory".
