Balanced Look at E-Commerce Business and Technical Process

Before reviewing the actual content, it is appropriate to mention that I teach a variety of computer courses for a technical college...and, therefore, read lots of books.
This text looks at business trading over the Internet from a process perspective. Marketing and Web page development are mentioned, but the focus of the content is on the technological "hoops" that are jumped through in order to complete e-commerce transactions.
The book includes chapters on Internet development history, packet-switching, server hardware and software considerations, security issues, payment systems, and marketing strategies (including the development of a business plan).
Instructionally, this book is current and a quality read (a little dry perhaps, but consider the material). The authors use many examples throughout and include many company and product names.
For someone in IT or management, this is a wonderfully balanced survey of e-commerce business structure and transaction process. The material presented will thoroughly get the reader up to speed on all of the aspects of ecommerce including most of the non-technical and semi-technical terminology. This really bridges the gap between IT professionals and traditional managers.
I feel that this is one of the better books I've ever used and recommend it highly for managers or instructors.

Not even worth $10. DONT BUY!

I bought this text book for a class on Electronic Commerce. This was the only recommended textbook. The class comprised mostly of students from MIS major and also students from a variety of other disciplines like computer science, mechanical, MBA, entre etc.

On a first glance, the book covers a good range of topics and also includes a few cases (one page scenarios about companies). The content is so generally written that you would have spent an hour reading a chapter and the amount of information you absorbed would be so little. Most of the information present in this book can VERY EASILY be obtained from wikipedia or a simple google search.

From my perception and a little searching, the author is an accountant. He has very limited knowledge of electronic commerce and of computer science, which can easily be inferred from so many instances in the book, where the terminology (especially computer science) is wrongly used. The author does not even have a website, let alone an e-commerce site.

To make matters worse, the author has written numerous other books in various niches. Personally, I would call him an opportunist, who rips off hundreds of dollars for every copy sold. It is so sad to see that this book is being sold for over $100. After all, there are no techniques involved, (like an algorithms book) and is just plain information which keeps changing so often. You WILL find all information from this book with a simple web search and/or wikipedia.

I prefer to read a book written by someone who has the expertise and knowledge on the field, for instance someone who has been a successful business professional in e-commerce and not by someone who just gathered all the information from the internet and sells it for $100.

I was able to convince my professor about the above facts and this book is NO longer prescribed as a textbook.

If you pay more than $10, it is a waste of money!

Best and Most Current Textbook Available

This is, without a doubt, the best and most current textbook on electronic commerce that is available today (and I understand these authors are planning to have a second edition of the book completed by February 2000 - which should be even MORE current).
The book offers a balanced business-technology approach to the subject of e-commerce and include a great overview of both relevant technologies and business/revenue models. The book includes important issues like legal and international concerns and even has a great little section on managing and staffing Web development projects in the last chapter.
This is the only book on e-commerce that I have seen that actually creates and uses a theory-based organizing framework (they build on Porter's work on value chains). Even though the book was clearly designed to be used in the classroom (it has problem assignments, exercises, and an extensive list of references at the end of each chapter), I think this book would be an excellent resource for a business manager that wanted to learn what all of this e-commerce stuff was all about OR for a techie that wanted to learn something about the business end of e-commerce.
The book is a very easy read and is remarkably interesting (even the chapter on security theories is pretty hard to put down... and that is some dull stuff, usually). The book includes bolded company names throughout and each of those names is included on the book's Web site as a hyperlink to the company site. This is very useful because you can see the examples that the book mentions come to life (if you can read the book while you're in front of your computer)...
I would recommend this book to any reader that wants to learn more about electronic commerce than you would find in a light overview book. This book gets into details, but in a very readable way.

After seeing several of my friends have an amazing amount of success with Forex trading, to the point where they were earning almost double their monthly salary, I knew I had to give it a go. With all of their advice I managed to make some headway, but it wasn't until I stumbled upon this book that I actually felt some real traction into the world of Forex. This books gives fantastic insights on how to find your way in this challenging, but extremely opportunistic, world of trading.

Very Useful Guide for Beginners

This book is really well written, easy to understand, and it is a very useful practical guide for beginners. I really liked the fact that the author is actually putting information about himself, giving to the book a personal human touch. Lots of suggestions, pros and cons are given about different methods - you can find many information on the Internet but this book helps you to clear your mind and make smart choices.
This book was overall really interesting, not too complicated for someone who is new to forex trading. I would definitely recommend it to someone who is interested in forex trading and doesn't know how to go deeper in this field.

May the Trend be your Friend

This is one book I wish I had when i started day trading a few years ago. The author explains his methodology, risk, the importance of discipline, avoiding "revenge trading", being aware of news, the wisdom of trading only one pair of currencies and much more. Just like you don't need to know how a car works before driving it, you don't need to know every technical detail about trading in order to be a trader. Jim knows and enjoys his subject and it shows in his writing. Reading it felt like I was being guided by a friend on a journey. Beginning and experienced traders will benefit from this book. Don't be scared, get prepared.

Anzaldua, a Chicana native of Texas, explores in prose and poetry the murky, precarious existence of those living on the frontier between cultures and languages. Writing in a lyrical mixture of Spanish and English that is her unique heritage, she meditates on the condition of Chicanos in Anglo culture, women in Hispanic culture, and lesbians in the straight world. Her essays and poems range over broad territory, moving from the plight of undocumented migrant workers to memories of her grandmother, from Aztec religion to the agony of writing. A WONDERFUL ASSORTMENT OF ANZALDUÁ’S PROSE AND POETRY

Gloria Anzaldúa (1942-2004) also wrote/edited This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color, This Bridge We Call Home: Radical Visions for Transformation, Interviews/Entrevistas, Making Face, Making Soul/Haciendo Caras: Creative and Critical Perspectives by Feminists of Color, The Reader, etc.

She wrote in the Preface to this 1987 book, “The psychological borderlands, the sexual borderlands and the spiritual borderlands are not particular to the Southwest. In fact, the borderlands are physically present wherever two or more cultures edge each other, where people of different races occupy the same territory, where under, lower, middle and upper classes touch, where the space between two individuals shrinks with intimacy. I am a border woman. I grew up between two cultures, the Mexican (with a heavy Indian influence) and the Anglo (as a member of a colonized people in our own territory). I have been straddling that… border, and others, all my life. It’s not a comfortable territory to live in, this place of contradictions. Hatred, anger, and exploitation are the prominent features of this landscape…

“This book, then, speaks of my existence. My preoccupations with the inner life of the Self, and with the struggle of the Self amidst adversity and violation; with the confluence of primordial images; with the unique positionings consciousness takes at these confluent streams, and with my almost instinctive urge to communicate, to speak, to write about life on the borders, life in the shadows. Books saved my sanity, knowledge opened the locked places in me and taught me how to survive and then how to soar… and words, my passion for the daily struggle to render them concrete in the world and on paper, to render them flesh, keeps me alive. The switching of ‘codes’ in this book from English to Castillian Spanish to the North Mexican dialect to Tex-Mex to a sprinkling of Nahuatl to a mixture of all of these, reflects my language, a new language---the language of the Borderlands. There, at the juncture of cultures, languages cross-pollinate and are revitalized; they die and are born.”

She observes, “Culture forms our beliefs. We perceive the version of reality that it communicates. Dominant paradigms, predefined concepts that exist as unquestionable, unchallengeable, are transmitted to us through the culture. Culture is made by those in power---men. Males make the rules and laws; women transmit them… The culture expects women to show greater acceptance of, and commitment to, the value system than men. The culture and the Church insist that women are subservient to males… For a woman of my culture there used to be only three directions she could turn: to the Church as a nun, to the streets as a prostitute, or to the home as a mother. Today some of us have a fourth choice: entering the world by way of education and career and becoming self-autonomous persons. A very few of us.” (Pg. 16-17)

She suggests, “Today, la Virgen de Guadalupe is the single most potent religious, political and cultural image of the Chicanlo/mexicano. She, like my race, is a synthesis of the old world and the new, of the religion and culture of the two races in our psyche, the conquerors and the conquered. She is the symbol of the mestizo true to his or her Indian values… Because Guadalupe took upon herself the psychological and physical devastation of the conquered and oppressed indio, she is our spiritual, political and psychological symbol… Guadalupe unites people of different races, religions, languages: Chicano Protestants, American Indians and whites…” (Pg. 30)

She explains, “So, if you really want to hurt me, talk badly about my language. Ethnic identity is twin skin to linguistic identity---I am my language. Until I can take pride in my language, I cannot take pride in myself. Until I can accept as legitimate Chicano Texas Spanish, Tex-Mes and all the other languages I speak, I cannot accept the legitimacy of myself. Until I am free to write bilingually and to switch codes without having always to translate while I still have to speak English or Spanish when I would rather speak Spanglish, and as long as I have to accommodate the English speakers rather than having them accommodate me, my tongue will be illegitimate. I will no longer be made to feel ashamed of existing. I will have my voice; Indian, Spanish, white. I will have my serpent’s tongue---my woman’s voice, my sexual voice, my poet’s voice. I will overcome the tradition of silence.” (Pg. 59)

She states, “The Writing is my whole life, it is my obsession. This vampire which is my talent does not suffer other suitors. Daily I court it, offer my neck to its teeth. This is the sacrifice which the act of creation requires, a blood sacrifice. For only through the body, through the pulling of flesh, can the human soul be transformed. And for images, words, stories to have this transformative power, they must arise from the human body---flesh and bone---and from the Earth’s body---stone, sky, liquid, soil. This work, these images, piercing tongue or ear lobes with cactus needle, are my offerings, are my Aztecan blood sacrifices.” (Pg. 75)

This book contains some of Anzaldúa’s most pointed and passionate writing. It will be great interest to those who already love her writings, or as an excellent introduction to her for those who don’t.

About the Author
Adam Blai is a modern religious demonologist who trains priests in exorcism at the national level. He is a peritus of the Roman Catholic Church in exorcism and religious demonology as well as an auxiliary member of the International Association of Exorcists. He has a Masters in adult clinical psychology and has worked in forensic and community clinical settings. He has performed hundreds of psychological evaluations and worked with the full range of mental illnesses.

A practical guide for the Catholic

A short and useful guide to the Catholic approach to the elements of the title. The author's goal is not to attract the reader with hair raising stories, but rather to provide practical advise on what to do and what not to do. In several situations, he leaves things out on purpose - essentially indicating a need to know restriction. My only criticism is that the text can be repetitive, but as a "manual" trying to convey critical points, probably this too is not a bad way to have written it. A take home message for the ordinary "curious" Catholic is here - allowing the reader to not overly fear such things, yet giving practical advice on how to avoid common mistakes in dealing with the dark ones among us.

An excellent introduction to Religious Demonology.

I thought that this was an excellent book. Adam Blai certainly seems to know his subject well. So many books on exorcism are all about sensationalism and cheap scares, this book isn't like that at all. Blai gives a very sober, professional and thorough run through of the basics of haunting, infestation, oppression and possession. He seems to be genuinely concerned about educating the public while at the same time keeping the public safe - he actually leaves out some of the more salacious details to that end.

This is one of the few books I've read that deals with the topic of human hauntings as well as demonic infestations. The book details in a clear and easy to understand way just how to tell human activity from demonic activity. Advice is given as to how demons enter into people's lives, how they remain there and how they may be removed. I wouldn't say however that this is a "handbook" on exorcism rather it is a basic primer on religious demonology that educates and warns the public on how to identify demonic activity and how help may be provided once identification is made.

Part one of the book discusses haunting, infestation, oppression and possession. Part two of the book contains prayers that could be used in cases of haunting, infestation and oppression. Possession and exorcism however need to be left to the experts and so little information is given into the actual process of a Major Exorcism. The book is very faithful to the teachings and laws of the Church and it is clear that Blai is operating entirely within the framework that the Catholic Church provides. As a Catholic myself I found this reassuring.

I found that the Kindle version had quite a few spelling and grammatical errors but in my experience that is not so unusual for Kindle versions. It didn't detract from my reading. All in all I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in religious demonology. It should be a text at seminary.

A thought-provoking read!

I first became aware of Mike Mahler's work back in 2008/2009 as I got interested in kettlebell training. I never really stuck with the kettlebells, but I got on Mike's mailing list.

A few weeks ago, I got an email that mentioned the podcast he does with Sincere Hogan also called 'Live Life Aggressively'. Listening through the back-episodes I learned that he'd written this book. I really enjoyed the podcast so I figured I'd see what the book was all about.

Interestingly, the first chapter of the book is about hormone optimization. That might seem odd for a motivational type of book, but he makes a good argument that if your hormones aren't balanced, success in other parts of your life will be elusive. Most of the rest book addresses significant barriers to what has been called 'the good life' or 'success', although he doesn't necessarily define success as simple material wealth. He returns to the theme of career happiness a few times over the course of the read and to good effect! It actually inspired me to finally start studying for my massage therapy national exam (I completed massage therapy training in the 90s but only got licensure for the state in which I was practicing at the time. I've wanted to quit my current career and do massage therapy again for quite a while but have been stalling about surmounting the barrier of the national exam). Any book that inspires purposeful direct action on a goal is a good book, in my opinion!

The author goes in some directions that may make you uncomfortable, but one often becomes uncomfortable when facing things we may not want to acknowledge about ourselves or our lives. Shrinking away from those topics is a sure-fire recipe for mediocrity.

Worthwhile even with flaws

I respect and trust Mike Mahler. I like and recommend this book despite flaws that, in the end, don't matter much.

Other reviews have described it as "brutally honest," but there's no brutality in it. Just straight talk, like from a brother or friend who will tell you what you need to hear when others are afraid to say it or just won't bother.

I have a few points of disagreement:

1. The book would have benefited from professional editing. It's good but it could be better.

2. Mahler is absolutely right about the necessity of eliminating emotional stress for health and strength, but he doesn't address situations in which "cut and run" isn't the answer. Given his high standards for integrity, I'd like him to write about that.

3. He's also right about not accommodating others when their desires are illegitimate. He doesn't consider situations in which you might choose to accommodate another person's wish. Maybe he meant only situations in which you wouldn't and shouldn't choose to go along, but it comes off sounding as if it's OK to be a snot.

These issues don't stop me from giving the book four stars. If they were addressed in a new edition I'd give it five.

Nice Job Mike !

I enjoyed Mike Mahler's book ( Live Life Aggressively ) however I think I ended up liking Mike more. What an astute, well grounded guy......and such insight for someone so young ! I bought Mike's book because I am very active in regards to working out and nutrition .......I am in my late 50s and am in damn good shape so I understand from where Mike speaks.......It will change your life, It will change who you are and how others see you. Mike makes the statement that some chapters are long and some are short and some you may want to skip, and I found that to be true. But from my perspective the book got better as I moved along, and very good near the end. As I stated before Mike seems to have great insight to life's ups and downs, of which I can attest too, and seems to be spot own. Towards the end of the book there is talk of happiness, integrity and knowing thy self, which all comes about as we move through this life and how life lessons are only really taught during the difficult times, when character is built and challenged. I agree with just about everything Mike has to say, I just don't know how he has managed to learn at 36 what has taken me over 50 years to learn. As I said at the top " Nice Job Mike " I would be proud to know you. Gary Holmes

This is science fiction without the fiction--and more mind-bending than anything you ever saw on Star Trek. Moravec, a professor of robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, envisions a not-too-distant future in which robots of superhuman intelligence have picked up the evolutionary baton from their human creators and headed out into space to colonize the universe.

This isn't anything that a million sci-fi paperbacks haven't already envisioned. The difference lies in Moravec's practical-minded mapping of the technological, economic, and social steps that could lead to that vision. Starting with the modest accomplishments of contemporary robotics research, he projects a likely course for the next 40 years of robot development, predicting the rise of superintelligent, creative, emotionally complex cyberbeings and the end of human labor by the middle of the next century.

Given the ever-increasing speed and memory size available to computer scientists, Moravec, who founded Carnegie Mellon's major robotics program, predicts that artificial intelligence will exceed human intelligence by 2050. He argues further that it is only a matter of time before we have computer simulations that will substitute for human functionality. (Yes, robots will take over the work force, but ultimately humans will benefit from a fully automated economy.) Moravec considers the various arguments, philosophical and otherwise, that have been made regarding whether computers can "think" and devotes a fair amount of coverage to questions Turing raised 50 years ago. His comparison of libraries to knowledge bases is simplistic?apparently, Moravec doesn't see any intellectual component to cataloging?but overall his interpretations are imaginative and his arguments interesting if not always convincing. Automation and quality of life

The best book on the future of robotics and automation! However, Hans believes robots are our wonderful mind children and should grow into powerful machines that evolve quickly past us. He is then horrified that some humans may transform themselves into machines and become very dangerous. Why won't his mind children be just as dangerous or more dangerous? At least a mind-transferred human might seek pleasure and fun. While Hans' logical AI robots make their galactic invasion plans!

Why not engineer automation to its pleasure giving limits? Instead of giving robots a high quality of life, design automation to increase EVERYONE quality of life and wealth on Earth???

Fantastic and imaginary!
This has a stodgy slow start covering the early years of robotics. But after this the book goes off with a bang. The self professed psychics fundamentalist expands a potential robotic future from basic principles. A thoroughly enlightening read.
