The artist's statement that "you work until the whole surface has an expressive intensity equivalent to what you have before you, converted into a pictorial reality" conveys something of the labor he brings to his works: López García is not a prolific artist, and as a result shows rarely (his 2008 exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, consolidated his already strong audience in the U.S.). His drawings and paintings are equally esteemed, but until now, the drawings have never been the subject of a monograph. All of the work in this superbly designed publication has been carefully selected by the artist's daughter, Maria; much of it has never been reproduced until now. Including 200 color plates and a moving text by the artist himself, it stands as a powerful testimony to López García's astounding achievement.
Antonio López García (born 1936) studied at the School of Art in Madrid in the early 1950s, and quickly became part of a nucleus of realist painters, such as Francisco López Hernández, Amalia Avia and Isabel Quintanilla. López García was the subject of Víctor Erice's 1992 film El Sol del Membrillo (The Quince Tree of the Sun), which closely chronicles the artist's attempts to paint a quince tree.

Antonio López García's Magic Shared

Antonio López García is one of the world's greatest artists, a painter and drawer who is less concerned with fame than he is with the truth of his creations. He is known to take extraordinary amounts of time to finish even the smallest drawing: his large paintings cover months to years of work. It is often been said that to appreciate an artist's skill and gifts first turn to the drawings. Drawings can be either preparatory sketches for a planned canvas or they can be simply captured moments in time, rendered perfectly to give not only a representation of the object but also an aura of the magic of being.
This book is a wonderful collection of many of Antonio López García's drawings - still lifes of small objects, figure studies, bare branches, flowers, toilets, sinks, - each rendered with a gentle honesty, and incomparable realism, never making the image more than it is, as López García believes everything we see has inherent perfection and beauty. The drawings are well reproduced and are accompanied by some of the artist's own commentary. He speaks as tenderly of his art as he practices it, giving reverence to the quality of light and the tranquility that he seeks to recreate in both graphite and paint. According to López García, 'you work until the whole surface has an expressive intensity equivalent to what you have before you, converted into a pictorial reality."

Beautiful!

An excellent overview of Antonio Lopez Garcia Drawings with beautiful reproductions and a refreshingly down to earth and rare essay by Antonio Lopez himself. The price is also very reasonable for a book of this quality. A must have for those who are fans of the work of the greatest living realist.

Stunning Work

This book makes you look twice - is it a photograph or is it really a drawing? Garcia's work is exquisite, showing his mastery of the pencil and of the line and of the subtleties of shade and shape. For anyone interested in the art and craft of drawing, I heartily recommend this volume - as well as the catalog of an exhibition in 2008 at the Boston MFA, which shows his work in color. Astounding volumes, both of them.
