About the Author
Ramesh Menon was born in 1951 in New Delhi. He has lived and worked in Delhi, Hong Kong, Bangalore, and Jakarta, and now lives in Kodaikanal. He is also the author of The Ramayana, A Modern Retelling of the Great Indian Epic (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2003).

Good effort......but not a satisfying read

I have been reading different translations of the Mahabharata recently. I read a few pages of Menon's translation on amazon and bought it. The whole book was not as satisfying as the preview had suggested.

Menon's is a wordy and detailed translation. He does not editorialize too much and tries to present the story as it was originally written. This provides some interesting ideas that the original writer intended to convey. I liked the numerous metaphors and descriptions of ancient habits. But, a lot of the time, the language uninspired. The dialogues are boring and passive. The original verse has been turned into dull prose.

To compare with this........RK Narayan's is a breezy summary, C Rajagopalachari's is authoritative but also brief, Buck's is a great read but is spoilt by the changes he made to an old and timeless story. I have not read Krishna Dharma. Hope this helps you decide if you want to spend 60$ for this book.

Review of Menon's Mahabharata (Volume Two)

I was surprised by the close contingency of poetry and scholarship within this work. Clearly, Menon was meant to write something--it might as well be the best available translation of the great Sanskrit epic poem. Like any other editor, Menon makes cuts here, there and everywhere, but he isn't afraid to offer a massive volume of text (two volumes, in fact). Still, the presentation is incredibly readable and shows a great knowledge of the English idiom.

What I would like to see is more annotation: chapter introductions, previews and summaries of the content contained within each Parva. This is a work designed for the laymen, but it could do with a few amendments for the eager student. A glossary of characters and more footnotes would help to make this the perfect piece of scholarship.

Captivating writing and Amazingly Lucid - Unputdownable

Having read various versions of Mahabharat from childhood, i came across Ramesh Menon's Modern Rendering through some excerpts in the erstwhile Tehelka Tabloid. From that time i wanted to read it. I got the kindle version and read it non-stop after work hours. It is so well-written, captivating, easy-flowing, detailed and simply superb. I thank Mr.Menon for his excellent work and i am glad i spent the money on this book. 5 Stars- no doubt

During the last days of the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic, three young women, members of a conservative, pious Catholic family, who had become committed to the revolutionary overthrow of the regime, were ambushed and assassinated as they drove back from visiting their jailed husbands. Thus martyred, the Mirabal sisters have become mythical figures in their country, where they are known as las mariposas (the butterflies), from their underground code names. Herself a native of the Dominican Republic, Alvarez ( How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents ) has fictionalized their story in a narrative that starts slowly but builds to a gripping intensity. Each of the girls--Patria, Minerva and Maria Terese (Mate) Mirabal--speaks in her own voice, beginning in their girlhood in the 1940s; their surviving sister, Dede, frames the narrative with her own tale of suffering and dedication to their memory. Butterflies is based on the lives of the four Mirabel sisters (code name: "Mariposas," that is, butterflies), three of whom were martyred in 1960 during the liberation of the Dominican Republic from the dictator Trujillo. Through the surviving sister, Dede, as well as memories of Minerva, Patria, and Maria Teresa, we discover the compelling forces behind each sister's role in the struggle for freedom. As Alvarez says "A novel is not, after all, a historical document, but a way to travel through the human heart." Though murder, torture, and imprisonment are ever-present, she wisely choses to focus on the personal lives of these young wives and mothers, full of love, beauty, and, especially, hope. Highly recommended for its luminescence and relevance.

I also lived Trujillo

As a Dominican who lived under Trujillo's dictatorship until his ovethrowing in 1961, I was very taken by Ms. Alvarez' book. Her portrayal of Dominican family life is accurate and lifelike. I remember the trial for the murder of the Mirabal sisters--it was the first televised trial in the history of the D.R. I am also a niece by marriage of General Federico Fiallo who is portrayed in the book, and although as an adult I know he committed heinous crimes under Trujillo's orders, I also want to say that in his private life he was a kind man to his nieces and nephews. He committed suicide when they came to arrest him at his home. All around me when I was a child was the specter of Trujillo and his spies and enforcers. The terror we citizens endured was quite real although we managed to live normal everyday lives. His hand was everywhere. Ms. Alvarez book put into perspective many things that from the point of view of a child you see but fail to digest.

A Literary Challenge

By means of the sharpened scalpel of fiction, Julia Alvarez carves and shapes the central characters in this difficult and delicate novel as subversive agents who see themselves obligated by fate to participate in the ultimate demise of an oppressive regime. Minerva, Patria, María Teresa, and Dedé, each one in her distinct fashion, break through the tyrannical grip that holds sway over an entire island population for thirty-one nightmarish years. Alvarez is at her absolute best here, far surpassing the previously successful HOW THE GARCÍA GIRLS LOST THEIR ACCENTS. Even the more recent SALOMÉ, in my view, doesn't come across as powerfully (especially for those readers unfamiliar with Dominican cultural history). IN THE TIME OF THE BUTTERFLIES is a masterful work that illustrates the perniciousness of political oppression in every aspect of a society, written in a language of turbulent calmness. As a Dominican myself who experienced first hand the unspeakable horrors of the Trujillo Dictatorship, I admit honestly that Alvarez has presented brilliantly the case of repression and heroism more formidably than any other writer. She has officially immortalized las hermanas Mirabal as national heroines.

Enthralling and gripping . . . thank you, Julia Alvarez!!!

Julia Alvarez does a brilliant job blending fact and fiction. The story of the Mirabal sisters is brought to life by Alvarez's extraordinary style of writing. I just can't find the right words to describe this book. It kept me on the edge of my seat, unable to put it down, wanting to read more and more. At times it is humorous and delightful, at others sad and horrific.
It is written from the perspective of each sister: the pious and religious Patria (the oldest), the strong and fiesty Minerva (I love her best), the sensitive yet willful Maria Theresa, and Dede - the one who lived. The one who realized her strength and independence despite her doubts. Even though it is Dede who was not killed in the ambush on "the lonely mountain road," it is really all four women who are survivors; Patria, Mate, and Minerva lost their lives, yet their spirits and their courage live on. Through Dede they live on. Perhaps that is why she was not killed - to live to tell her sisters' stories as well as her own. Dede has always wondered why she escaped death, why she wasn't killed; interviewers always ask her that, yet she does not know why. But I believe that is the reason: she could tell their story.
It is interesting how different and diverse the four sisters' personalities are, yet I see a bit of each one in every woman. Patria, the hopeful; Minerva, the feminist; Maria Theresa, the giver; and Dede, the unsure yet strong.
What's more I learned of the dictator Trujillo and what was like to have lived under his regime. I never knew about him, never even heard of him until I read this book. This made me want to read and learn more not only about the Mirabal sisters, but about Trujillo ("El Jefe"). I love to read a book of fiction and learn about historical events - about people who actually existed and made a difference despite everything going against them. I learned of a period of history in a country that I knew nothing about (The Dominican Republic [I wonder why it's called that?] as well as a dictator I never heard of. For that, I thank Julia Alvarez.
This is one of the best books I have ever read, and I recommend it highly for everyone - men and women, Dominican and non-Dominican, young and old. It is an inspiring read.

Really interesting

Talks in depth about mating on each of the seven planes of consciousness, among other interesting topics. The topic is the same as the first chapter of The Perfect Matrimony by Samael Aun Weor. But since this is an entire book rather than a single chapter, it goes into much more detail and renders the subject much more understandable.

If You're into Esoterica, Read this Book.

If your not the type of person who generally agrees with esoteric/occultic thought, then you may take issue with some of what is presented in this book... but, then again, if you already have qualms with esoterica, why are you reading anything by Dion Fortune?

A lot of what is written in this book - I feel - must be taken in conjunction with the perspective of the author: the time period, where she comes from, and her status within that society. For example, I would question her opinion on homosexuality (even though I'm not a homosexual), given the pluralistic values of our current culture in comparison to the values of her time. None-the-less, she makes an excellent argument for her position: each chapter gradually building upon the previous chapters successively until the breadth of material becomes clear. Questions I had in the beginning and middle of the book were addressed in later chapters, leaving no holes by the conclusion.

I would, though, especially recommend that the reader take their time on the chapter regarding the 7 planes. Having those clear in your mind will make the rest of the book much easier to comprehend.

Otherwise, I agree with the other reviewers. I thoroughly appreciated how this book made a consideration of the energetic principles involved in how human being relate to one another (as opposed to providing a "thou shalt/shalt not" list of behavior based on some doctrine that doesn't explain the WHY of the preference/avoidance). This is one of those books which, personality being accepting to a different perspective, all youths should read as a "coming of age" into their adulthood (and the sexual liberty that comes with it). It would aid to dodge a lot of unhealthy relationships.

I only gave this book 4 stars based upon my ability to test its veracity against an internal sympathy/harmony. (I would have been very happy to give it a 4.5 if that were an option). Yet, this may be simply a symptom of a lack of understanding, experience and/or ability to comprehend on my part.

In any case, it's a relatively inexpensive book and a quick read (my wife and I read it together in the course of an afternoon), so there's really nothing to lose by purchasing & reading this book.

Indispensable work on Divine Marriage

As with most of Dion Fortune's works (said only because I haven't yet read them all), this piece is indispensable for anyone wanting to understand the world around them. Yes, it is about marriage -- and not only on the physical plane; that is what makes it so potent, because Fortune shows why natural marriages are as they are FROM SPIRITUAL CAUSES. But because all of creation is built up from this basic marriage of two divine halves, the book offers much to consider in contemplating any subject.
The nice thing here, too, is that despite the depths that Fortune can reach in certain works, she tries to keep this one simple enough for even beginning readers. By the end she may really be pushing them ... but by then, they've been well prepared.
This is a must-have for any student of the esoteric.

- More mechanical facts
- A more thorough coverage of all models (e.g. the 800 sporstster is barely mentioned)

Esta segunda novela del escritor emergente David Camacho le sigue, en calidad, a su primera obra "Los Zapatos Blancos". Es una novela llena de suspenso, de diferentes puntos de vista acerca de los caminos que uno elige en la vida, de personajes que sorprenden, alegran y - en algunos momentos - hasta hacen enojar. Es, además y no menos, un libro de viajes en tren a través de Rusia. Después de haber leído el libro, uno tiene la sensación de haber estado por esos parajes y haber vivido esas experiencias. Recomiendo esta obra, así como recomiendo a su obra anterior. Desde ya me alegro mucho por su tercer libro, que espero no se demore demasiado en ser creado!

Tom Cole was a larger than life true blue Australian adventurer--crocodile hunter, horse-breaker,buffalo-shooter,ranch manager and explorer.His autobiography is written with great humor.It is set in the last true frontier--the Australian outback.A marvellous book.

Not So Long Ago...

Tom Cole reveals the Northern Territory of Australia in all its untamed and raw delights. Amazingly we had barely encroached on this area just 50 years ago, a fact he bears witness to. He passed away just a few years ago, but left us several good books before he departed. This one relates the story of his life as a stockman (cowboy) and croc hunter, of the people & cattle stations which began to spread across the territory, and attests to the difficulty in establishing their viability.

Hell West and Crooked derives it's title from an Australian stockman's term to describe cattle and livestock scattered far and wide all over the Outback countryside.

This book is part biography, part adventure, and part history. Tom Cole was the real deal, a son of the great Australian Outback, and a keen observer of what it was like to live in the Northern Territory of Australia in the 1920's and 1930's. It is an easy and entertaining journal of this young man's life in those wild times. He was a stockmen, horse breaker, consummate horseman, buffalo hunter, and crocodile hunter long before Mick Dundee.

Tom Cole's writing style vividly presents what it was like to live on the frontier of a still sparsely populated land even today.
